Iran’s Cultural Community Unites in Grief Over Shahid Rajaee Port Tragedy

In the wake of a devastating explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port in southern Hormozgan Province, which tragically resulted in the death and injury of over 1,200 individuals, the cultural community in Iran has come together to express their condolences. This tragic incident has prompted heartfelt messages from various cultural figures, highlighting the nation’s sorrow and support for the affected families.

The Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Seyyed Abbas Salehi, conveyed his deep sympathy for those injured and the families of the victims. He also extended his best wishes to the rescue teams working diligently at the scene, as reported by ISNA. In his message, Salehi emphasized:

“The cultural and artistic community of Iran stands in solidarity with the noble people of Bandar Abbas and the affected families; just as in the early hours of this painful event, the mournful drumming by artists at Iran’s Regional Music Festival became the background music to this national mourning, echoing the collective grief to all.”

He went on to beseech the Almighty for forgiveness and mercy for the deceased, as well as patience for the bereaved and recovery for the injured:

“I beseech Almighty God to grant forgiveness and divine mercy to the deceased, patience and solace to the bereaved, and recovery and health to the injured.”

The 17th Iran’s Regional Music Festival, which commenced on April 24 in Bandar Abbas, was scheduled to conclude its performances on April 28. However, following the announcement of three days of public mourning in the province, the festival was cut short. The decision was made in light of the tragic events and the concerning air pollution situation, making it inappropriate to continue performances and gather audiences.

The festival organizers issued a statement expressing their condolences to the grieving families and wishing a swift recovery to the injured. As a result, the performances were concluded:

• The festival was originally set to conclude on April 28.
• Public mourning was declared for three days in Hormozgan Province.
• Continuing performances was deemed inappropriate due to the tragedy and air pollution concerns.

In a related announcement, Mohammadreza Saberi, Secretary and Spokesperson of the Cinema Owners Association, expressed his condolences for the loss of lives in the Shahid Rajaee Port tragedy. He stated that an extraordinary meeting of the Central Board of the Association took place on Sunday, leading to a significant decision:

“In an extraordinary meeting of the Central Board of the Association held today (Sunday), it was decided that all cinemas across the country will be closed tomorrow, Monday, April 28.”

Saberi further emphasized the collective mourning within the cinema community:

“The cinema community, cinema owners, and we at the Cinema Owners Association are deeply mourning this great tragedy, and we hope that the injured from this bitter incident will recover as soon as possible.”

In a statement from the Public Relations Office of the General Directorate of Performing Arts, theater artists expressed their shared sorrow over the loss of compatriots in the tragedy at Shahid Rajaee Port. They announced:

“Out of sympathy for this incident, performances of comedy plays will not be staged on Monday, April 28.”
