Iran’s Ambitious Plan: Boost Daily Natural Gas Production by 250 Million Cubic Meters in Just 5 Years!
In a significant announcement, Touraj Dehghani, the CEO of the Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC), highlighted the urgent need for Iran to enhance its gas production capacity. According to Dehghani, the country must increase its gas output by a staggering 250 million cubic meters (mcm) daily by the year 2030 to meet the surging energy demands of both households and industries.
Dehghani elaborated on the crucial role of his company in the operations of South Pars, a massive gas field situated in the Persian Gulf, which is co-owned by Iran and Qatar. The POGC is set to play a pivotal role in achieving the planned increase in gas production.
He emphasized that Iran is on track to achieve a target of 150 mcm per day in new gas output in the upcoming years. This projection is backed by comprehensive plans, budgets, and investments that the government has finalized to support the initiative.
“Relying on the know-how and experience of domestic experts, we are sure that we will materialize at least 150 mcm in new gas production capacity in the next four or five years,” Dehghani stated during a news conference in Tehran, as reported by PressTV.
Currently, Iran has a production capacity of just over 1 billion cubic meters of sour gas per day. Out of this, more than 871 mcm is converted into sweet gas, which is then injected into the nationwide gas pipeline network.
The South Pars field is crucial for Iran, accounting for approximately 70% of the country’s gas output. It currently produces more than 2.6 billion cubic meters of gas annually, which is valued at nearly $100 billion.
To ensure the stability of gas supplies, Dehghani announced that Iran plans to invest $17 billion in the South Pars project in the coming years. This investment aims to prevent any pressure drops that could lead to significant disruptions in nationwide gas supplies.
Despite facing sanctions, Dehghani noted that domestic companies like the POGC have successfully managed various projects in South Pars. This success is noteworthy, especially considering that major international energy companies continue to operate on the Qatari side of the vast gas field.
