Iranian Women: Empowering Change and Achieving Greatness, Says Samaneh Baher

Iranian skier Samaneh Beyrami Baher is making waves in the world of sports, showcasing the immense talent of women athletes in Iran. Recently, she participated in the women’s 5km free cross-country skiing event at the Harbin Asian Winter Games, expressing her excitement and celebrating her experience, even though she finished in 19th place.

“This is my first competition in China, and it feels like I’m participating in the Olympics. Everything here is fantastic — the facilities, the track, the organization and the food — it’s all up to Olympic standards,” the 33-year-old shared with Xinhua.

Having previously coached Iran at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea, last year, Beyrami Baher approached this event with realistic expectations. “I just want to give it my all. There are many outstanding athletes competing,” she stated.

Her journey in skiing has been a passionate one. “I gradually fell in love with the sport. It filled my spare time and became a big part of my life,” she reflected. However, she noted that skiing is less common in Iran and there is limited support for athletes in the sport. Despite these obstacles, she was determined to break barriers and represent her country at the Winter Olympics.

Unlike many of her peers who train full-time, Beyrami Baher juggles her commitments as an architect alongside her athletic aspirations. She fits in her training sessions early in the morning and late at night. “It’s hard to keep going, but I love it because it’s challenging,” she admitted. “Sometimes, I feel defeated, but the dream of competing at the Olympics pushes me to overcome those challenges.”

Her dreams came true in 2018 when she qualified for the Pyeongchang Games. At the opening ceremony, she had the honor of carrying the Iranian flag, a moment that left her overwhelmed with emotion. “I cried out of happiness. I promised to do my best and make my country proud,” she recalled.

Beyrami Baher is not just focused on her performance; she aims to inspire other women in Iran to engage in sports. “Sport can truly change your life. It builds confidence and brings new experiences. I believe Iranian women are talented and can achieve great things in sports,” she emphasized.

  • Overcoming Barriers: She is dedicated to breaking the limitations faced by female athletes in Iran.
  • Passion for Skiing: Beyrami Baher discovered her love for skiing, which has become a significant part of her life.

She believes that with hard work and determination, anyone can achieve their dreams, regardless of the challenges they face. Her story is a testament to the potential of women athletes in Iran and their ability to shine on international platforms.

As she continues her journey in sports, Samaneh Beyrami Baher remains hopeful for the future of women in athletics in Iran. She encourages young girls to pursue their passions, reminding them that every step taken towards their goals is a step towards achieving greatness.

In conclusion, Beyrami Baher’s experience at the Harbin Asian Winter Games is just one chapter in her inspiring story. Her dedication to skiing and her commitment to empowering other women athletes make her a role model for many. With her eyes set on future competitions, she embodies the spirit of resilience and passion that defines not only her career but also the potential of women in sports across Iran.
