Iran Slams US Aggression in Yemen: A Call for Peace and Solidarity

In a recent development, Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, expressed strong concerns regarding the United States’ military actions and aggressive rhetoric towards Iran and Yemen. These issues have raised alarms about violations of international law and the potential for escalated conflict in the region.

In a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the UN Security Council, Iravani stated, “I wish to express my deep concern and unequivocal condemnation of recent belligerent statements by senior officials of the United States administration, including the president of the United States, while they were attempting desperately to unlawfully justify the US’ acts of aggression and war crimes against Yemen, leveling baseless accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran and openly threatening the use of force against Iran.”

The backdrop of these statements includes recent military strikes by the US, which resulted in significant casualties. At least 53 people, predominantly women and children, lost their lives, while over 101 others suffered injuries following the US’s first military actions against Yemen since President Trump assumed office in January. These large-scale strikes targeted the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, and various provinces across the nation on a Saturday night.

In a pointed remark, President Trump asserted that the US holds Iran “fully accountable” for its support of the Ansarullah resistance movement in Yemen. He emphasized that this support must “end immediately” and warned that Washington will ensure Tehran faces the consequences of its actions.

Iravani’s Response to US Aggression

In his correspondence, Iravani described the anti-Iran rhetoric from US officials as a clear violation of international law and the UN Charter. He noted, “Such inflammatory rhetoric constitutes a blatant violation of fundamental principles of international law and of the United Nations Charter, particularly Article 2(4), which prohibits threats or use of force against sovereign states.”

He strongly rejected these provocations, saying, “The Islamic Republic of Iran firmly rejects and condemns these reckless and provocative statements.” Furthermore, he warned that any act of aggression against Iran would carry severe repercussions, for which the US would be held accountable.

In light of these tensions, Iravani called on the UN Security Council to denounce such incendiary statements. He urged the Council to adopt a clear and principled stance, emphasizing that “the normalization of threats of force sets a dangerous precedent and poses serious risks to international peace and security.”

Condemnation of Military Actions in Yemen

Additionally, Iravani condemned the recent military aggression and unlawful actions taken by the US and UK against Yemen. He stated, “The Islamic Republic of Iran unequivocally condemns the recent military aggression and unlawful use of force against Yemen by the United States and the United Kingdom.”

He elaborated that these actions violate Yemen’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, contravene international law, and endanger regional peace and stability. “These actions flagrantly violate Yemen’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, contravening international law, the United Nations Charter, and relevant Security Council resolutions,” he emphasized.

As a responsible member of the international community, Iran asserts that it has consistently adhered to its obligations under international law and supports maritime safety and freedom of navigation. Iravani also pointed out that Yemeni forces are independent in their decision-making and actions, conducting operations in support of Gaza and in response to violations of their country’s territorial integrity.

Escalating Tensions and Military Strikes

This exchange of aggressive statements and military actions comes amidst claims from the United States regarding extensive airstrikes across Yemen. These strikes occurred shortly after the Ansarullah resistance movement warned that Yemeni Armed Forces would target American aircraft carriers and warships in the region.

On the night of the military strikes, the US launched extensive air assaults on the Yemeni capital Sana’a and various provinces, resulting in the deaths of dozens, including women and children. American and British warplanes reportedly executed 47 airstrikes on targeted locations in Yemen’s capital and other northern regions, such as Sa’ada, al-Bayda, and Dhamar. This military action has raised serious humanitarian concerns and highlighted the ongoing crisis in the region.

In conclusion, the escalating conflict presents a dire challenge for international diplomacy, as the Iranian government continues to call for accountability and adherence to international norms. As tensions rise, the global community watches closely, urging for a de-escalation of hostilities in the interest of regional stability and peace.
