Iran Slams IAEA Chief: Accuses Politics of Distorting Remarks
In recent developments, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) has expressed concerns over comments made by Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). These remarks have been perceived as politically charged and biased against Iran.
The AEOI released a statement on Thursday highlighting the expectations for the IAEA’s director general to conduct himself in a manner that is:
- Impartial
- Professional
- Free from political bias
Unfortunately, the AEOI claimed that “some of Mr. Grossi’s comments and stances, especially recently, are devoid of such qualities,” adding that the integrity of the IAEA could be at risk. They accused Grossi of allowing the United States and certain Western nations to manipulate the IAEA for political ends.
On the same day, while addressing an audience in Tokyo, Grossi asserted that Iran must prove it is not attempting to develop nuclear weapons. In response, the AEOI stated that it is the responsibility of the accusing parties to furnish evidence to support their claims.
Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear initiatives are solely for peaceful civilian purposes. As part of the 2015 nuclear agreement, Iran agreed to enhance the IAEA’s access to its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of U.S. and international sanctions.
During his remarks in Tokyo, Grossi criticized the 2015 deal, stating it was “no longer fit for purpose.” This agreement faced significant challenges when the United States withdrew under President Donald Trump in 2018, subsequently undermining its enforcement by the remaining signatories: Iran, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, China, and Russia.
Trump has indicated a willingness to negotiate a new deal with Iran while simultaneously reinstating a strategy of “maximum pressure” on the nation. However, Iranian officials have made it clear that they will not engage in negotiations under conditions of threat and coercion.
