Iran Sees Surge in Marine Tourism: Over 1.6 Million Coastal Trips Recorded!
In a significant development for maritime transport in Iran, the Director-General of Maritime Affairs at the Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), Allah Morad Afifi Poor, reported that approximately 231,000 vehicles were successfully transported by sea to the popular Qeshm and Kish islands. This surge in maritime activity highlights the growing importance of sea travel in the region.
During this period, the PMO also noted that around 59,000 passenger and recreational vessels operated smoothly along the coastline. However, the maritime authority has raised concerns regarding the impact of adverse weather conditions on marine travel. Afifi Poor stated that these conditions have led to temporary suspensions of services, emphasizing the need for caution.
According to forecasts, severe weather is expected to persist until Wednesday, which will necessitate ongoing restrictions on maritime traffic. In light of these developments, Afifi Poor has urged passengers to adhere strictly to safety protocols and to avoid using unauthorized vessels during this challenging time.
“The severe weather has affected western coastal regions and will continue to impact other areas. People must follow the authorities’ guidance for their safety,” Afifi Poor emphasized, highlighting the critical nature of compliance with safety measures.
Looking ahead, Iran is poised to accelerate its maritime trade and economic growth in the year 1404 (2025-2026). The government has set a strategic focus on strengthening the maritime economy, expanding transit options, and improving logistics management systems. This initiative is part of a broader vision to enhance Iran’s position in the global maritime sector.
Saeed Rasouli, the Deputy Minister of Transport and Acting Head of the PMO, reaffirmed these priorities in his Nowruz message. He announced that a substantial budget of 154 trillion rials has been allocated for commercial port investments, which signifies a commitment to modernizing the maritime infrastructure.
- Key initiatives have been introduced by the PMO:
- Port tariff reforms
- Increased investment in maritime infrastructure
- Operational enhancements to boost competitiveness
Rasouli emphasized the importance of modernization in the maritime sector, particularly through the development of smart ports and digital integration. These advancements are seen as critical steps towards enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring that Iran remains competitive in the maritime industry. Furthermore, he highlighted the necessity of coordination among the maritime, rail, and road transport sectors to create more effective trade corridors.
Expressing optimism for the future, Rasouli stated that the year 1404 is expected to mark a transformative phase for Iran’s maritime industry. This transformation is anticipated to drive economic prosperity and foster technological progress across the sector.
The PMO’s commitment to improving maritime services and infrastructure is expected to have a ripple effect on the economy, potentially leading to increased job creation and higher levels of trade. As Iran continues to navigate the challenges posed by weather conditions and economic demands, the maritime sector remains a cornerstone of its economic strategy.
As the situation develops, it’s crucial for all stakeholders within the maritime sector, including passengers, operators, and regulatory authorities, to stay informed and proactive. The PMO will continue to monitor weather conditions and issue updates regarding maritime travel to ensure the safety of all participants in the industry.
