Iran Seeks Stronger Cultural and Economic Ties with Bashkortostan: Focus on Handicrafts Collaboration

TEHRAN — Handicrafts are emerging as a vital tool for enhancing the creative economy and fostering cultural diplomacy, according to Maryam Jalali-Dekhordi, Iran’s deputy minister for handicrafts and traditional arts. During her recent participation at the Sibay Investment Conference and a UNESCO expert meeting in Bashkortostan, she emphasized the potential for collaborative initiatives between Iran and Russia’s Republic of Bashkortostan, highlighting the significance of these crafts in economic development and cultural exchange.

The Sibay Investment Conference, which saw attendance from key figures including the head of the Bashkortostan Republic, created a platform for deepening economic and cultural ties between Iran and the region. Jalali-Dekhordi’s presence at the World Crafts Council (WCC) evaluators’ session further underscored the pivotal role that handicrafts play in both economic growth and cultural diplomacy.

“Handicrafts are not only narrators of the past, but by combining tradition and innovation they help build a sustainable future,” she stated, as reported by the Cultural Heritage News Agency (CHTN) on Saturday. This statement encapsulates the multifaceted benefits of handicrafts, which include:

  • Income Generation: Handicrafts provide essential revenue streams for artisans and local communities.
  • Job Creation: They create decent jobs that contribute to sustainable livelihoods.
  • Tourism Attraction: Handicrafts draw tourists, both locally and internationally, enriching cultural tourism.

Jalali-Dekhordi also reflected on the historical connections between Iran and Bashkortostan, particularly along the Volga–Ural trade routes and the ancient Silk Road. She described handicrafts as a vital “bridge” that can facilitate deeper cultural and economic cooperation between the two regions.

In her remarks, she proposed a series of initiatives aimed at fostering collaboration, including:

  1. Joint workshops to share skills and techniques.
  2. Reciprocal exhibitions in historic cities to showcase each other’s handicrafts.
  3. Documentation of traditional handicraft knowledge to preserve cultural heritage.

Jalali-Dekhordi also emphasized the significance of UNESCO’s living Silk Road network, suggesting that international exhibitions and artisan exchanges could further strengthen the creative economy and highlight shared experiences between cultures.

According to her, Iran boasts an impressive portfolio with:

  • 299 active handicraft branches.
  • 17 cities and villages designated as World Craft Cities and Villages.
  • 82 locations recognized at the national level.

She positioned these resources as essential for enhancing cultural tourism and fostering sustainable economic growth within the region.

Moreover, Jalali-Dekhordi commended the handicrafts of Bashkortostan, such as silver jewelry and traditional embroidery, identifying them as valuable assets for promoting bilateral cooperation. She noted that Sibay, situated at the historic crossroads of Europe and Asia, has applied for recognition in various craft disciplines including:

  • Stone and wood painting
  • Stone carving
  • Felt-making
  • Traditional women’s clothing and jewelry

In Sibay, over 100 artisans are actively engaged in diverse fields such as stone and wood carving, pottery, felt-making, carpet weaving, embroidery, and jewelry-making. The city’s craft development is strategically linked to its cultural tourism expansion plans, positioning it as a hub for artistic expression and cultural exchange.

As the collaboration between Iran and Bashkortostan continues to unfold, the potential for handicrafts as a force for economic development and cultural diplomacy is more apparent than ever. By fostering these connections, both regions stand to benefit from enriched cultural heritage and sustainable economic growth. The future of handicrafts not only reflects tradition but also embodies innovation and collaboration, paving the way for a prosperous cultural dialogue.
