Iran Ranks Among the Top Ten Nations in Nanotechnology Research Publications!

In 2024, Iran has made significant strides in the field of nanotechnology research, publishing a remarkable total of 4,615 articles in top-tier Q1 journals. This achievement positions Iran among the top ten countries globally in nanotechnology publication, and it ranks 12th in terms of h-index for nano-articles. The following information highlights Iran’s prominent status in this rapidly evolving scientific discipline.

According to recent reports, the leading countries in nanotechnology publications are:

  • China: 86,924 articles
  • United States: 14,473 articles
  • India: 11,194 articles

Interestingly, Iran surpasses other notable countries, including:

  • England – 4,360 articles
  • Japan – 4,022 articles
  • Spain – 3,830 articles

The Q1 journal index categorizes scientific journals based on their impact, utilizing metrics such as Impact Factor, Scimago Journal Rank (SJR), h-index, and citation counts. This classification is essential for assessing the quality of published research.

The h-index, introduced by physicist Jorge Hirsch, is a key metric for evaluating the scientific impact of researchers, journals, and universities. It combines the quantity of publications with the quality of those works, emphasizing the number of citations received. This metric is crucial for understanding the influence of research in the scientific community.

Despite experiencing a decline in patenting nanotechnology since 2011, Iran ranks among the top 30 countries in this domain, holding the 27th position in 2024. Notably, the percentage of granted patents has increased from 19% in 2023 to 25% in 2024, showcasing a positive trend in innovation.

Furthermore, Iran has seen a slight rise in the number of published and granted patents, moving from 17% in 2023 to 19% in 2024. By the end of 2024, the country had published 364 nanotechnology-related patents with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and a significant 25% of these patents are in the nanotechnology sector.

Iranian Nanotech Journals Among World’s Most Cited

The Journal Citation Report (JCR) for 2024 recognized 161 Iranian journals, highlighting five of them as among the most cited in the nanotechnology field. Some key journals include:

  • Journal of Nanostructure in Chemistry (JNSC): Affiliated with Islamic Azad University, this journal has an impact factor of 7.9 and ranks among the top 25% in JCR across three categories:
    • Nanoscience and Nanotechnology – Ranked 34 out of 147
    • Chemistry, Multidisciplinary – Ranked 41 out of 239
    • Material Science, Multidisciplinary – Ranked 88 out of 460
  • Journal of International Nano Letters: Affiliated with Kermanshah Islamic Azad University, impact factor: 4.0
  • Nano-medicine Journal: Affiliated with Mashhad Medical Science University, impact factor: 1.7
  • Journal of Nanostructures: Affiliated with Kashan University, impact factor: 1.3
  • International Journal of Nano Dimension: Affiliated with Tonekabon Islamic Azad University, impact factor: 1.1

So far, ten out of the twelve specialized nanotechnology journals in Iran have been indexed in the international Scopus database, with five of those journals receiving an impact factor.

Understanding Journal Citation Reports (JCR)

The JCR 2024 includes data from over 21,000 journals across 113 countries and 254 research categories. It serves as a vital resource for assessing the impact and performance of scholarly journals in various fields, including science, technology, and the social sciences. The most recognized metric provided by JCR is the Journal Impact Factor (JIF), which indicates how often articles in a particular journal are cited within a specified year.

Data for the JCR is sourced from the Web of Science Core Collection, a comprehensive citation index that ensures only high-quality journals meeting rigorous standards are included. This provides users with reliable information for evaluating journal performance.

Annual JCR reports offer an extensive array of metrics, including the JIF and the Journal Citation Indicator, enhancing users’ understanding of journal impact and relevance in the research community.

As Iran continues to make advancements in nanotechnology research and publication, it is clear that the nation is committed to fostering innovation and contributing to global scientific knowledge.
