Iran Opens Doors to Foreign Investment in Thriving Pharmaceutical Sector, Says Health Minister

TEHRAN – Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarqandi has recently emphasized Iran’s commitment to attracting foreign investment in its burgeoning pharmaceutical industry. This initiative aims to enhance the country’s healthcare capabilities and provide greater access to essential medicines.

During a conference titled ‘Health Investment: A Bridge for Regional Prosperity’, which took place at the eighth edition of the Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Zafarqandi highlighted Iran’s readiness to foster constructive cooperation in this regard. The exhibition, running from October 27 to 30, serves as a platform for promoting health investment across the region.

According to Zafarqandi, “Today, Iran is a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer in the region, which has been able to address a large part of its needs through domestic production, ranging from generic drugs to biotechnology and biosimilar products.” This statement underscores Iran’s significant capabilities in the pharmaceutical sector.

Key attributes of Iran’s pharmaceutical industry include:

  • High Production Capacity: The country has the ability to produce a vast array of pharmaceuticals to meet both local and international demands.
  • Innovative Leadership: Iran is at the forefront of advancements in cell therapies and biopharmaceuticals.
  • Expert Human Resources: The industry benefits from a skilled workforce dedicated to healthcare innovation.
  • Adherence to Global Quality Standards: Iranian pharmaceutical products are manufactured under strict quality regulations.
  • Competitive Pricing: The affordability of Iranian pharmaceuticals enhances their attractiveness in the global market.

In his address, Zafarqandi expressed the goal of establishing collaborative ventures that focus on:

  1. Research and development.
  2. Production of complex generic drugs and biopharmaceuticals.
  3. Creating a resilient regional supply chain for active pharmaceutical ingredients.

He further clarified that generic drugs are biologically identical to brand-name drugs but are marketed under their chemical or generic names, making them a crucial component of Iran’s healthcare strategy.

Moreover, Zafarqandi emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia. He stated, “Let’s utilize the two countries’ scientific capabilities, financial resources, and prospects to turn into a regional power in the health field, and make a healthier future for our people.” This sentiment reflects a broader vision for regional collaboration in healthcare.

As part of the delegation representing Iran, Zafarqandi and other senior managers from the pharmaceutical and medical equipment industries are actively participating in the Global Health Exhibition. The event, themed ‘Invest in Health’, is expected to attract over 2000 regional and global brands, 20 country pavilions, and 500 international speakers, according to Mehr news agency.

As one of the most notable healthcare events in the region, the Global Health Exhibition presents an excellent opportunity for Iran’s health ministry to:

  • Enhance scientific and technological ties with regional countries.
  • Meet with international counterparts.
  • Showcase Iran’s achievements in medical sciences and technology.
  • Explore joint investment opportunities and share expertise.

The exhibition is designed to highlight next-generation healthcare innovations, including:

  • Digital transformation in healthcare.
  • Investment opportunities in medical technology.
  • Strategies for controlling emerging infectious diseases.
  • Safeguarding the supply chain of medicines and medical equipment in the region.

Additionally, events such as the Digital Health Forum, Leaders Summit, and Investor Venture Forum will be held on the sidelines of the exhibition. These events aim to foster discussions on the future of healthcare and encourage collaborative efforts to improve health services.

In conclusion, Iran’s proactive approach to attracting foreign investment in its pharmaceutical industry not only promises to elevate the country’s healthcare standards but also positions it as a key player in the regional health landscape. The ongoing Global Health Exhibition serves as an ideal venue for promoting these initiatives and enhancing international partnerships.
