Iran Launches Legal Battle Against Google for Distorting the Name of the Persian Gulf
Tehran, IRNA – The National Virtual Space Center is set to take legal action against Google and other international platforms for distorting the historical name of the Persian Gulf, according to the center’s spokesman.
Hossein Dalirian highlighted that this issue will be pursued through international legal channels, describing it as a deliberate falsification of a well-established geographical and historical fact. The recent usage of fabricated titles in place of the Persian Gulf by several platforms, including Google, has sparked significant backlash from the Iranian public and various international figures.
Dalirian emphasized the importance of the term “Persian Gulf,” noting that:
- It has been consistently used for thousands of years in historical documents, maps, and treaties.
- It is recognized by authoritative institutions, including the UN Group of Experts on Geographical Names under UN ECOSOC Resolution 715.
Furthermore, he stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran views the use of incorrect names as a violation of its national identity, constituting a breach of Article 19(3) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. To address this issue, the center plans to hold a legal consultation session soon, gathering legal experts and representatives from relevant government bodies.
In summary, the National Virtual Space Center is taking a firm stand against the misrepresentation of the Persian Gulf, emphasizing its historical significance and the need for accurate geographical terminology.
