Iran Issues Strong Warning to European Troika Over Misuse of JCPOA ‘Snapback’ Mechanism
In a recent development concerning the 2015 nuclear deal, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has expressed strong criticism towards the E3—Britain, France, and Germany—for their threats to invoke the “snapback” mechanism. This mechanism, initially intended as a last-resort tool for resolving disputes, is now being misused as a form of diplomatic leverage, according to Araqchi.
In an op-ed published in the French weekly Le Point, Araqchi outlined significant concerns regarding the implications of these threats:
- Risk of a Global Crisis: He warned that such brinkmanship could lead to a global non-proliferation crisis, affecting primarily the European nations involved.
- Failure to Uphold Promises: Araqchi highlighted that while Iran has remained committed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the E3 has not honored their commitments, with European firms complying with U.S. sanctions against Iran.
- Economic Benefits Unfulfilled: He pointed out that the promised economic advantages under the JCPOA have not materialized for Iran.
- Clear Stance on Snapback Mechanism: Araqchi reiterated Iran’s position, warning all signatories of the JCPOA that any misuse of the snapback mechanism will carry consequences.
The E3 has made multiple attempts at the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to pass resolutions aimed at activating the snapback mechanism against Iran. Observers believe this strategy is an effort to apply pressure on both Iran and the United States, especially as ongoing negotiations exclude third parties.
Concluding his article, Araqchi expressed hope for a more positive future, encouraging European nations to move away from confrontation and engage more diplomatically with Iran.
