Iran and Russia Unite: Pezeshkian Highlights Shared Perspectives on Regional Challenges
In a significant diplomatic engagement, President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran has emphasized the importance of sustained and constructive regional interactions with Russia. This collaboration is vital as both nations align in their perspectives on various regional issues.
During a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, President Pezeshkian articulated the mutual aspirations of Tehran and Moscow to strengthen their regional and international cooperation. Key organizations facilitating this partnership include:
- Shanghai Cooperation Organization
- Eurasian Economic Union
- BRICS
The President expressed his satisfaction regarding the expansion of bilateral relations while stressing the urgency to accelerate the implementation of existing agreements, particularly the comprehensive strategic agreement between the two nations. “Iran and Russia possess ample potential to enhance their collaboration, and we are determined to strengthen the Tehran-Moscow ties,” he stated.
In response, Lavrov conveyed warm greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin and expressed complete agreement with Pezeshkian’s observations. He reiterated Russia’s dedication to nurturing cooperation and hastening the execution of bilateral agreements, notably the comprehensive strategic agreement.
Lavrov also underscored the importance of Iran’s upcoming membership in the Eurasian Economic Union, considering it a valuable opportunity to enhance economic and trade relations. He noted, “Iran and Russia have many common interests in continuing their effective regional cooperation with each other.”
Lavrov’s visit to Tehran occurred shortly after his discussions with his Turkish counterpart in Ankara. Russian media reported that he will also engage in talks with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi concerning both regional and bilateral matters.
This visit follows President Pezeshkian’s trip to Moscow on January 17, where he met with President Putin to sign the comprehensive strategic agreement aimed at further expanding bilateral cooperation.
