Iran and Oman Explore Exciting Sea-Based Tourism Partnership

In a significant move towards enhancing bilateral tourism ties, Iran and Oman have engaged in discussions focused on expanding cooperation in various sectors of tourism, particularly emphasizing sea-based and health tourism. This discussion took place during a meeting between Iran’s Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts, Reza Salehi-Amiri, and Oman’s Minister of Heritage and Tourism, Salem bin Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, on the sidelines of the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The meeting highlighted several key areas for potential collaboration, with Salehi-Amiri proposing a three-pronged approach to boost tourism between the two nations.

• Increasing the number of direct flights between Iran and Oman from 12 to 60 per week.
• Organizing tourist car rallies and joint cultural events.
• Conducting mutual tourism exhibitions in Tehran and Muscat to showcase the tourism capacities of both countries.

Salehi-Amiri underscored Iran’s vast potential in the field of medical tourism, stating, “With more than 1,000 hospitals and hundreds of thousands of doctors and specialists, Iran can provide high-quality and affordable medical services to Omani tourists. This sector can become one of the main pillars of cooperation between the two countries.”

Furthermore, he extended an invitation to the Omani minister to attend the Tehran International Tourism and Related Industries Exhibition scheduled for February. This event will provide a valuable opportunity for Oman to gain insights into Iran’s latest tourism projects and capacities.

Expressing his satisfaction with the outcomes of the meeting, Al Mahrouqi remarked, “Iran is a strategic and historical partner for us and a source of stability in the region. The relations between our two nations are based on respect and long-standing friendship, and we have always welcomed the development of cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Al Mahrouqi also praised the proposal for sea-based tourism, calling it “smart and practical.” He pointed out that Oman, with its extensive coastline and over 40 ports, is poised to sign a memorandum of understanding with Iran aimed at developing cruise tourism and facilitating the exchange of marine tourists.

The Omani minister noted the increasing interest among Omani citizens in visiting Iran, describing it as an attractive, safe, and culturally rich destination with substantial potential in historical, natural, and health tourism. He expressed support for the proposal to organize joint tourism exhibitions and collaborate on the registration of traditional irrigation systems known as qanats on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Al Mahrouqi added, “We are ready to host an Iranian health tourism exhibition in Muscat so that the people of Oman can become familiar with Iran’s medical and tourism capacities.” He emphasized, “Iran holds a distinguished position in the region in the field of medicine and health services.”

At the conclusion of their discussions, the two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation across various tourism sectors, including marine, health, cultural, and exhibition tourism. They agreed to establish a joint working group tasked with monitoring the implementation of the agreements reached during the meeting.
