Iran and EAEU Forge 3-Year Free Trade Roadmap: A New Era of Economic Collaboration

In a significant development for trade relations, Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) have officially signed a three-year roadmap aimed at enhancing economic cooperation. This strategic agreement was inked in Moscow by Iran’s Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade, Mohammad Atabak, along with Andrey Slepnev, the Minister in Charge of Trade for the EAEU’s executive body. This collaboration marks a new chapter in Iran’s engagement with the EAEU, fostering opportunities for mutual benefits in trade and logistics.

The signing ceremony, which took place on Wednesday, followed the inaugural committee meeting focused on the implementation of their existing free trade agreement. This proactive approach highlights the commitment of both parties to strengthen their economic ties and create a robust framework for future cooperation.

According to Atabak, the newly established roadmap will guide trade and economic interactions between Iran and the EAEU through to 2028. He emphasized that this document, along with additional agreements anticipated to be signed, will significantly enhance bilateral collaboration in several key sectors:

  • Halal Trade: Promoting trade in halal products to meet the demands of diverse markets.
  • Logistics: Improving supply chain efficiency between member nations.

Andrey Slepnev, as reported by Russia’s Tass news agency, described the roadmap as “a comprehensive document.” He explained that it encompasses critical elements such as transport logistics and the establishment of a North-South transport corridor that will connect Iran and Russia. This corridor is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting trade efficiency between the two nations.

Furthermore, Slepnev highlighted the agreement on creating green customs corridors, which will facilitate environmentally friendly trade practices. He also noted the importance of digitalization in customs operations, indicating a shift towards electronic transit systems. The foundation of the free trade agreement between Iran and the EAEU was laid in December 2023, granting Iran tariff-free exports on approximately 87 percent of its trade with EAEU member states, which include Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia. This agreement represents a significant advantage for Iranian exporters, as it reduces barriers and opens up new markets.

Prior to this landmark free trade deal, Iran and the EAEU were engaged in a preferential trade arrangement established by a deal signed in June 2017 in Armenia. This prior arrangement laid the groundwork for the current enhanced cooperation and set the stage for further integration between Iran and the EAEU.

In December of the previous year, during a Supreme Council meeting in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Iran also signed an agreement to become an observer member of the EAEU. This status is expected to provide Iran with additional insights and opportunities to engage more deeply with the economic bloc.

As these agreements unfold, both Iran and the EAEU are optimistic about the potential for increased trade volumes and collaboration on diverse economic fronts.
