Iran and Azerbaijan Unite for Exciting Bilateral Cultural Weeks: A Celebration of Heritage and Friendship!

In a significant effort to enhance cultural ties between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan, a meeting took place at the Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan in Baku. This gathering aimed at discussing the organization of joint cultural weeks and days, showcasing the commitment of both nations to strengthen their cultural connections.

The event was attended by prominent officials from Iran’s Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO) alongside senior cultural representatives from Azerbaijan, as reported by ILNA on Saturday. Abdolreza Rashed, the Deputy for Regional and International Relations Development at the ICRO, emphasized the need for fostering bilateral cultural relations between the two countries.

“Just as the Presidents of both nations have committed to enhancing bilateral relations, cultural officials must also dedicate their efforts to achieving these shared objectives,” Rashed stated. He underscored the ICRO’s role in globally strengthening and coordinating cultural relations. The development of cultural exchanges is crucial as it lays the groundwork for broader cooperation across various sectors.

Rashed identified the primary objective of the meeting as exploring the organization of a cultural week between Iran and Azerbaijan. He proposed that these cultural weeks be initiated in the capitals of both nations, which would allow for experience accumulation before extending the program to other cities.

  • Tabriz City’s Involvement: Rashed announced that officials from Tabriz expressed readiness to host the Azerbaijani cultural week.
  • Potential Hosts: Other Iranian cities, including Ardabil, Urmia, Isfahan, Shiraz, and Mashhad, were suggested as potential hosts for Azerbaijani cultural weeks.

He elaborated on the diverse components planned for the cultural week, which will include:

  • Handicrafts
  • Traditional arts
  • Music
  • Cinema and theater
  • Performing arts and animation
  • Cultural technologies and creative industries
  • Calligraphy and miniature art
  • Fashion
  • Cuisine
  • Literature
  • Other cultural topics

To facilitate these events, Rashed proposed visiting cultural facilities in Baku, Ganja, and Nakhchivan to evaluate potential venues and resources. He also highlighted the forthcoming Shahriar Congress in Tabriz, inviting Azerbaijani researchers, writers, and enthusiasts of the renowned Iranian poet to participate. Furthermore, he encouraged Azerbaijani cultural delegations to visit selected Iranian cities and cultural sites, suggesting that the final agreement for the cultural week be signed in Tehran.

Farid Jafarov, Deputy for International Relations at Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Culture, expressed Azerbaijan’s eagerness to host these joint cultural weeks. He referenced the recent visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Azerbaijan and the signing of a memorandum of understanding focusing on cultural exchanges.

“It is essential to hold these events at the highest level to deepen bilateral cultural relations,” Jafarov emphasized. He also mentioned Azerbaijan’s interest in organizing Azerbaijani Cultural Days in Tehran, Tabriz, Ardabil, and Urmia, which would feature:

  • Concerts
  • Theater performances
  • Traditional Azerbaijani dances

Huseyn Muradov, Deputy Minister of Culture for Artistic Affairs in Azerbaijan, highlighted the importance of collaboration in cinema and traditional music. He noted that the Heydar Aliyev Foundation organizes international mugham music competitions in Azerbaijan where Iranian participants have consistently demonstrated exceptional talent.

During the meeting, both sides reached an agreement on:

  • Coordinating the exact dates for the cultural weeks
  • Establishing rules and regulations
  • Considering potential limitations

The timing for the cultural weeks was tentatively set for after Nowruz 1405 (March 2026), allowing both Iran and Azerbaijan to schedule their respective events accordingly. The session concluded with a thorough review of logistical arrangements and planning specifics for the Iran-Azerbaijan cultural weeks, aimed at fostering closer ties through shared cultural celebrations.

This collaborative effort marks a significant step in enhancing cultural diplomacy between Iran and Azerbaijan, paving the way for future exchanges that celebrate the rich heritage and traditions of both nations.
