Status of ICT in Iran
The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology serves as the highest authority overseeing the ICT sector in Iran. All activities related to the information and communication technology industry are coordinated through this ministry, ensuring a streamlined approach to ICT development.
The Iranian government emphasizes the importance of ICT in enhancing citizens’ lives through various initiatives and policies. A notable achievement showcasing Iran’s technological capabilities is the successful design, construction, and launch of a satellite, which reflects the nation’s growing scientific and technological prowess.
Space technology is viewed as a means to promote prosperity, peace, scientific and cultural development, and economic growth. Countries worldwide leverage this technology based on their unique capacities and efforts.
Currently, 13 universities and a research institute affiliated with the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology offer aerospace majors, indicating Iran’s significant capability in training specialists and experts in the aerospace sector, positioning the country as a regional leader.
Access to telecommunication services has improved significantly in rural areas, with the total number of villages gaining communication services rising to 52,182, which accounts for approximately 93% of all villages. Furthermore, 47,837 villages now have access to landline services.
According to the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA), the number of mobile users in Iran has reached nearly 135.89 million, illustrating a mobile phone penetration rate of 161.67%. However, the adoption rate of fixed broadband in Iran has stagnated at 14%, meaning that about 11.92 million customers have access to the Internet through fixed-line services.
This data indicates that the growth of fixed broadband internet has increased by less than 2% compared to the previous year. In contrast, mobile internet has experienced a substantial growth rate of 10%. However, it is noteworthy that mobile internet expansion is occurring at a rate five times faster than that of fixed broadband.
In summary, the IKT 2025 conference promises to be a pivotal event for professionals in the information and communication technology sector, providing a platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and discussing the future of technology in Iran and beyond.
