Geneva Talks: E3 Diplomats Push for Sanction Relief with Iran

Geneva Negotiations: E3’s Push to Lift Sanctions Takes Center Stage, Says MP

In recent developments surrounding the Geneva talks, Iranian diplomats have reiterated their primary objective: the removal of Western sanctions against Tehran. This assertion comes from Ebrahim Rezaei, a senior member of the Iranian Parliament, who shared insights following a critical committee session.

During the session, Foreign Ministry officials provided an update on the ongoing negotiations with the E3—comprising Britain, France, and Germany. Rezaei emphasized several key points regarding the discussions:

  • Iran’s diplomats are committed to ensuring that any aggression towards Iranian facilities will provoke a calculated response.
  • There is a clear warning that if the other parties to the Iran nuclear deal activate the snapback mechanism, Iran will respond by invoking Article X of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and will consider withdrawing from the treaty.
  • The Iranian Foreign Ministry has made it clear that Tehran will not accept any preconditions while engaged in the Geneva talks.

These discussions mark the second round of negotiations since November, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilize relations. The backdrop of these talks is significant, as they follow the unilateral withdrawal of the U.S. from the nuclear deal by President Donald Trump, which resulted in the re-imposition of severe economic sanctions on Iran. This action severely disrupted the agreement, particularly as European nations failed to uphold their commitments to mitigate the consequences of the U.S. exit.

As the Geneva talks progress, the outcome remains critical not only for Iran but also for the broader geopolitical landscape in which these negotiations unfold.

The new contract involves pressure-boosting measures but experts warn that it may only slow production decline rather than halt it. Iran plans to build smaller platforms for gas extraction, but lacks experience in this area, raising concerns about future gas supply stability.
