Former Israeli Security Leaders Urge Trump to Take Action and End Gaza Conflict
In a significant call for peace, more than 600 retired Israeli security officials, including former leaders of intelligence agencies, have urged US President Donald Trump to exert pressure on the Israeli government to conclude the ongoing war in Gaza. This plea, as reported by France 24, highlights the growing concern among these officials regarding the prolonged conflict and its implications for Israel’s future.
In an open letter disseminated to the media on Monday, the retired officials stated, “It is our professional judgement that Hamas no longer poses a strategic threat to Israel.” They urged President Trump to “steer” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decisions towards a peaceful resolution.
Ami Ayalon, the former director of the Shin Bet security service, emphasized, “At first this war was a just war, a defensive war, but when we achieved all military objectives, this war ceased to be a just war.” His remarks reflect a critical turning point in the conflict, which has now extended into its 23rd month.
Ayalon further warned in a video accompanying the letter that the ongoing war “is leading the State of Israel to lose its security and identity.” This sentiment resonates deeply, considering the impact of the conflict on both the nation and its citizens.
The letter, which garnered signatures from 550 individuals, including former heads of Shin Bet and the Mossad spy agency, specifically called on Trump to guide Netanyahu towards a ceasefire. They argued that the pressure for a ceasefire has intensified, driven by international demands aimed at securing the release of Israeli hostages from Gaza and facilitating humanitarian aid distribution by UN agencies.
However, within Israel, there remains a faction, including some ministers in Netanyahu’s coalition government, advocating for the continuation of military operations in Gaza, with proposals for a potential occupation of the region, either wholly or partially.
Among the prominent signatories of the letter were three former heads of the Mossad: Tamir Pardo, Efraim Halevy, and Danny Yatom. Additionally, five former heads of Shin Bet, including Ayalon, Nadav Argaman, Yoram Cohen, Yaakov Peri, and Carmi Gilon, as well as three former military chiefs of staff—Ehud Barak, Moshe Yaalon, and Dan Halutz—added their names to this crucial appeal.
The letter articulated several pivotal arguments:
- The Israeli military has successfully achieved its primary objectives: dismantling Hamas’s military capabilities and governance.
- The third and most significant objective can only be realized through diplomatic means: securing the return of all hostages.
The retired officials conveyed to Trump that he possesses considerable credibility among the Israeli populace and could exert meaningful pressure on Netanyahu to bring an end to the conflict and secure the release of hostages.
Furthermore, they proposed that following a ceasefire, Trump could facilitate the formation of a regional coalition to support a reformed Palestinian Authority, which could take over Gaza in place of Hamas’s governance.
This appeal from retired security officials underscores the urgency for dialogue and resolution in a conflict that has persisted for far too long. As international pressure mounts, the hope is that a ceasefire can pave the way for lasting peace, stability, and a brighter future for both Israelis and Palestinians.
