Experience the Timeless Tale: ‘Of Mice and Men’ Comes to Life on Stage in Tehran

Currently captivating audiences at the Hafez Theater Hall in Tehran is a loose adaptation of the renowned novella “Of Mice and Men” by American author John Steinbeck. This poignant play, directed by Mehdi Rezai, is scheduled to run until March 10, 2025. It explores themes of friendship, dreams, and the harsh realities faced during the Great Depression.

The cast of this compelling production includes talented actors such as Ali Baqeri, Milad Farajzadeh, Hamid Rashid, Borna Ansari, and Negar Salahshour.

Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, “Of Mice and Men” follows the journey of two migrant field workers in California: George Milton and Lennie Small. Their story is a powerful narrative that highlights the struggles of individuals seeking a better life amidst adversity.

The relationship between George and Lennie is central to the story. Here are some key elements that define their bond:

  • George is portrayed as intelligent yet uneducated.
  • Lennie, a large and strong individual, faces mental challenges.
  • Together, they dream of owning a piece of land, symbolizing hope.
  • Lennie’s innocent desire to care for rabbits reflects his childlike nature.

The narrative begins with George and Lennie on the run from the town of Weed, where a misunderstanding involving Lennie results in false accusations against him. This incident sets the stage for their deep reliance on each other, with George serving as Lennie’s protector.

Upon finding work at a ranch, they encounter a variety of characters, including:

  • Curley: The boss’s aggressive son, who dislikes Lennie due to his size.
  • Curley’s wife: A flirtatious figure who complicates the dynamics on the ranch.
  • Candy: An older, disabled handyman who becomes their friend.
  • Slim: A competent mule driver who shows kindness to Lennie.

As the story unfolds, the dream of owning land becomes more concrete when Candy offers to contribute $350 for their shared vision. However, this excitement is short-lived as Curley attacks Lennie, who, encouraged by George, retaliates and injures Curley.

After this incident, George temporarily abandons Lennie to socialize with others from the ranch, showcasing the complexities of their relationship. Later, Lennie has a poignant conversation with Crooks, the isolated black stable hand, where they discuss their aspirations. Candy tries to uplift them against Crooks’ pessimism, but the fragility of their dreams is palpable.

As tensions rise, Curley’s wife confronts the men, revealing her own feelings of isolation. Tragedy strikes when Lennie accidentally kills his puppy, leading to a devastating encounter with Curley’s wife. She seeks companionship, and when Lennie strokes her hair, a moment of panic ensues, resulting in her accidental death.

In the aftermath of her death, a lynch mob forms to hunt Lennie. Understanding the gravity of their situation, George rushes to find Lennie at their predetermined meeting spot. There, he comforts his friend by recounting their dream one last time, knowing it has turned to dust.

As the mob closes in, George makes a heart-wrenching decision—he shoots Lennie in the back of the head, offering a merciful end compared to the brutal fate awaiting him. Slim is the only character who truly understands the depth of George’s sacrifice, while Curley and Carlson remain oblivious to the emotional turmoil beneath George’s actions.

This adaptation of “Of Mice and Men” not only pays homage to Steinbeck’s original work but also resonates with contemporary audiences, reminding us of the enduring themes of friendship, dreams, and the harsh realities of life. Don’t miss this powerful portrayal at the Hafez Theater Hall until March 10, 2025.
