Expediency Council Greenlights Palermo Bill with Key Conditions

In a significant move towards enhancing international cooperation, Tehran has announced its approval for Iran’s accession to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, also known as the Palermo Convention. However, this approval comes with certain conditions.

Mohsen Dehnavi, the spokesperson for the Expediency Council, shared this update on his official X account on Wednesday. He emphasized that Iran has embraced the convention in alignment with its constitution and various domestic laws.

Furthermore, Dehnavi noted that future sessions of the Expediency Council will focus on discussions regarding Iran’s potential membership in the Convention on Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT). This indicates a proactive approach by Iran to ensure compliance with international standards.

Key points regarding Iran’s commitment to international conventions include:

  • The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) comprises 42 agreements, with 40 of them already implemented in Iran in previous years.
  • Both the Palermo Convention and the CFT have been under review by the Expediency Council as part of Iran’s efforts to facilitate foreign trade.
  • The Iranian parliament had previously approved the country’s conditional accession to the Palermo Convention, which was subsequently confirmed by the Guardian Council.

This move reflects Tehran’s ongoing efforts to navigate global economic landscapes and remove barriers to its foreign trade activities.
