DOE and IIDCYA Unite for a Greener Future: Championing Environmental Protection Together!
In a significant move to enhance environmental awareness, the Department of Environment (DOE) has joined forces with the Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (IIDCYA) by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU). This collaboration aims to promote environmental protection among children and young adults in Iran.
The MOU was officially signed by Hadi Kiadaliri, the deputy head of the DOE for education and public participation affairs, and Hamed Alamati, the director of IIDCYA, during a ceremony held at the IIDCYA office in Tehran on Wednesday.
This ceremony coincided with the second day of National Children’s Week, celebrated nationwide from October 7 to 13, under the theme ‘children, joy of life’. Each day of this week is dedicated to a specific topic, which reflects the diverse aspects of childhood and the environment:
- Tuesday, October 7: Family, the beautiful world of children
- Wednesday, October 8: Earth, our home
- Thursday, October 9: Life, Play, Health
- Friday, October 10: Comets (in memory of martyred children and adolescents in Iran and Gaza)
- Saturday, October 11: Books, the wonderful world of children
- Sunday, October 12: The sweet world of children with special needs
- Monday, October 13: Children and the modern world of sciences and technologies
The Department of Environment recognizes that education plays a pivotal role in enhancing environmental protection. To support this, they are set to launch a national project aimed at training eco-friendly students, referred to as ‘environmental helpers’, in 20 percent of elementary schools across the country. This initiative was initiated in partnership with healthcare providers alongside the new academic year that began on September 23.
The primary goal of this project is to identify students who are passionate about environmental issues and to encourage them to join a working group dedicated to environmental topics. According to Mohammad Medadi, an official with the DOE, these enthusiastic students will subsequently train their peers to raise awareness about environmental issues.
The initiative is designed to expand its reach gradually, aiming to cover all schools within a five-year timeframe. Additionally, the project includes informal educational activities in the form of extracurricular programs. A crucial aspect of this initiative is the development of a national environmental subject that will contribute to a structured roadmap for formal environmental education, ensuring relevant content is integrated into school curriculums.
To effectively instill eco-friendly behaviors, it is essential to introduce environmental education at a young age, ideally during elementary school or even preschool years. However, the journey is not without its challenges. As Medadi pointed out, education is a continuous process, and short-term or temporary courses will not lead to lasting behavioral changes. The commitment to fostering environmental awareness requires time and sustained effort to yield positive outcomes.
By promoting environmental education and awareness among the younger generations, this collaboration between the DOE and IIDCYA aims to cultivate a society that values and actively participates in environmental protection. As children learn about their responsibilities toward the Earth, they will grow into informed and responsible adults who prioritize sustainability.
Through this initiative, the DOE and IIDCYA are taking significant steps to ensure that environmental education becomes a cornerstone of childhood development, ultimately benefiting both the children and the environment they inhabit. The upcoming years will be crucial in monitoring the impact of this project as it unfolds across schools, shaping the next generation’s understanding of environmental stewardship.
In conclusion, the partnership between the DOE and IIDCYA marks an important milestone in fostering environmental awareness in Iran, highlighting the critical role education plays in shaping a sustainable future.
