Bastam Castle, located in the scenic Semnan Province of north-central Iran, is an emerging tourist destination that attracts both local and international visitors. With approximately 37,000 tourists flocking to this historical site since the beginning of the current calendar year (March 20), it has become a must-visit location for those interested in Iran’s rich history and culture.
According to Gholam Shirzad, the head of Bastam Castle National Base, the majority of foreign tourists hail from countries like Austria, Sweden, and Germany. He noted that German and Austrian archaeologists have a profound understanding of this ancient monument, leading to annual visits from their experts and specialists.
In addition to exploring Bastam Castle, tourists are also drawn to the area’s numerous natural and historical attractions, including:
- Aghchai River
- Kasian Bridge
- Churs Mosque
- Tekyeh of Hazrat Abolfazl (AS)
- Beig Javan Bath
To enhance the visitor experience, private investors are currently working on constructing an ecotourism residence in Churs village and a traditional restaurant in Bastam village. These developments aim to encourage longer stays and provide essential amenities for tourists.
Shirzad mentioned that the estimated costs for these projects are:
- 300 billion rials (approximately $300,000) for the ecotourism residence in Churs village
- 500 billion rials (approximately $500,000) for the traditional restaurant in Bastam village
Additionally, the Omid Entrepreneurship Bank has allocated 40 billion rials (around $40,000) for both the traditional restaurant in Bastam village and the ecotourism residence in Churs village. Progress is also being made on the specialized archaeological museum at Bastam Castle, which is currently 75% complete and requires an additional 20 billion rials (approximately $20,000) for its completion.
A private investor is also developing a tourism camp site near Bastam Castle. This site is expected to feature:
- Sanitary facilities
- Parking spaces
- Residential units
- A restaurant
- Various other amenities for tourists
One significant artifact from Bastam Castle, an inscription written in the Urartian language, is currently housed at the National Museum of Tehran for further study by researchers. This historical monument has been officially recognized, having been registered on the National Heritage List in 1975.
Recently, Bastam was added to Iran’s list of historical cities during the second conference of Iran’s historical cities held in Yazd, which gathered representatives from 43 cities to discuss strategies for preserving and promoting urban heritage.
As of now, Bastam is among 54 cities recognized as historical cities in Iran. Nestled near the Alborz Mountains, this ancient city is celebrated for its monuments surrounding the tomb of Bayazid al-Bastami, a renowned poet and mystic who passed away in 874 CE.
The town is home to several architectural marvels, including a mausoleum, a 12th-century minaret, a mosque wall, a portal from 1313, and a college dating back to the 15th century. Nearby ruins further showcase the region’s rich history, featuring a mosque and cloister adorned with exquisite stucco work.
A significant portion of Bastam’s historic architecture was constructed during the Mongol era under rulers such as Mahmud Ghazan (r. 1295–1304) and Oljaytu, also known as Mohammad-e Khodabandeh (r.1304–1316).
