Captivating Palestinian Photo Exhibit Unveiled in the Heart of Iraq’s Capital
In a poignant display of artistry and resilience, a photo exhibit by Palestinian photographer Mahmoud Abu Hamda titled “Malam Yoshahid” (What Was Unseen) was inaugurated at the Bait al-Jamal Lil-Funun art center in Baghdad on Tuesday. This exhibition underscores the harsh realities faced by the people of Gaza, a theme that resonates deeply within the current humanitarian crisis.
The event was attended by a diverse audience, including Iraqi artists, art enthusiasts, and notable officials such as Mohanad Hussien, Ahmed Al Fkaiki, and Mohammed al-Ammy. According to the Art Bureau of Iran’s Islamic Ideology Dissemination Organization, the exhibition showcases a collection of Abu Hamda’s work, created over the past two years during the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has been marked by extreme hardship and suffering.
This compelling exhibit features a total of 57 photographs that poignantly depict the horrific experiences of innocent children who have endured the devastating impacts of war, including:
- Injury
- Displacement
- Emotional trauma
The Iran Photographers House has taken a significant step by purchasing the rights to display Abu Hamda’s works and has made them available for sale at the exhibition. The proceeds from this sale are intended to support the people of Gaza during these trying times.
What makes this exhibition particularly unique is that it is one of the rare showcases by a Gaza-based photographer that offers an authentic and vivid representation of life in Gaza during the Al-Aqsa storm. Its documentary-style nature provides a crucial perspective that is rarely seen on a global scale.
Abu Hamda’s photographs combine artistic technique, light, and deep emotion to present an unfiltered view of the human impact of the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Reflecting on his work, he stated: “My work in photography goes beyond capturing images; it is a journey to discover the secret of the hidden soul in every corner, an effort to embrace the beauty that beats in this land.”
Through his powerful imagery, Abu Hamda emphasizes the human cost of conflict and highlights the resilience of the Palestinian people. This exhibit serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of resistance and hope amidst adversity.
The exhibition not only showcases art but also offers the people of Baghdad a chance to connect with the struggles and aspirations of their Palestinian counterparts. As the crisis in Gaza continues, it has been two years since Israel commenced its military operations in the region, beginning on October 7, 2023, in response to attacks by Palestinian fighters. The consequences of this conflict have been catastrophic, with reports indicating that:
- At least 67,000 Palestinians have lost their lives.
- More than 20,000 children are among the deceased, while over 169,000 others have sustained injuries, many with life-altering consequences.
The healthcare system in Gaza is on the brink of collapse, with over 125 facilities damaged, including 34 hospitals. Medical personnel have also faced dire conditions; as of July 2023, Israeli authorities have detained numerous senior doctors, some of whom have reportedly died under torture. Furthermore, Israeli strikes have targeted medical facilities and aid workers, violating international laws designed to protect healthcare infrastructures.
Since the onset of the conflict in October 2023, there have been over 790 documented attacks on health infrastructure. The blockade and military restrictions have further exacerbated the humanitarian situation, leading to a severe famine that has claimed at least 459 lives, including 154 children.
The United Nations officially recognized the famine in Gaza in August 2023, marking it as the first in the Middle East in recent history, with predictions indicating that conditions may worsen. Malnutrition rates among children have surged, with thousands suffering from severe acute malnutrition, and many infants being born prematurely or underweight.
The ongoing violence and blockade have culminated in a humanitarian disaster for the population of Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for global awareness and support. The exhibition by Mahmoud Abu Hamda serves as a vital platform to raise awareness about these critical issues, inviting viewers to reflect on the human stories behind the statistics and to consider the resilience of the Palestinian people in their quest for dignity and justice.
