Bridging Continents: The Transformative Impact of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)

The 2025 Media Cooperation Forum on Belt and Road commenced on Tuesday in Kunming, Yunnan Province, providing a pivotal global platform aimed at fostering development, enhancing collaboration, and promoting shared prosperity across nations. This significant event attracted over 200 representatives from 87 countries, which included both international and regional organizations, as well as 165 media outlets, as reported by Chinese media.

This forum served as a unique opportunity for meaningful dialogue among journalists, policymakers, and experts, highlighting the essential role media plays in shaping a global understanding of development and international cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

During his speech, Yu Shaoliang, president of the People’s Daily, emphasized the media’s importance in promoting the BRI. He stated, “The Belt and Road Initiative platform is important for multipolar development, humanitarian exchanges, and creating new opportunities for cooperation.” Yu urged journalists to strengthen relationships, advocate for high-quality BRI infrastructure projects, and fulfill their duty to provide accurate reports on developmental achievements.

Participants of the forum collectively stressed that media organizations should act as both recorders and promoters of the Silk Road spirit, which supports principles of equality, mutual learning, dialogue, and inclusiveness among civilizations. They agreed that collaborative reporting initiatives across Yunnan and other regions in China would effectively showcase the BRI’s global impact, enhancing mutual understanding among various peoples worldwide.

Transforming Global Development Through the BRI

Since its launch in 2013, the BRI has evolved into a global public good, connecting continents such as Eurasia, Africa, and Latin America. Over 150 nations and 30 international organizations have joined this initiative, making it a truly global platform for collaboration.

The BRI is structured around key components such as:

• Consultation: Engaging in discussions to align goals and strategies.
• Joint Planning: Collaborating to maximize the potential of shared resources.
• Shared Benefits: Ensuring that all partner countries reap advantages from the cooperation.

Experts present at the forum noted that the BRI exemplifies a modern model of win-win cooperation. Unlike traditional aid, China shares technology, expertise, and capital in ways that empower partner countries to enhance the value of their natural and human resources. This collaborative approach stands in contrast to zero-sum frameworks, emphasizing that mutual prosperity is vital for global stability and peace.

Global Governance Initiative and BRI Cooperation

The forum occurred in the context of President Xi Jinping’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI), which was proposed during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus meeting in Tianjin on September 1, 2025. In unveiling the GGI, Xi emphasized the necessity for inclusive, cooperative, and high-quality international development. He asserted, “We should continue to dismantle walls, not erect them; we should seek integration, not decoupling. We should advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, and push for a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.”

The GGI reflects China’s broader diplomatic philosophy aimed at establishing a fairer global governance system while enhancing development cooperation. Speakers at the forum highlighted how the BRI aligns with GGI principles, providing practical tools for countries to collaborate effectively, overcome developmental challenges, and pursue sustainable growth without creating dependency.

China-Iran Cooperation Under the BRI

Prior to attending the SCO summit in Tianjin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to “serious and constructive cooperation” with China, particularly within the BRI framework. Iran’s strategic geographical position and active engagement make it an essential partner for improving regional connectivity and trade, effectively linking Central Asia, the Middle East, and beyond.

Collaborative projects between China and Iran under the BRI encompass:

• Infrastructure Development: Building roads, bridges, and transportation networks.
• Energy Cooperation: Joint ventures in energy production and distribution.
• Logistics Networks: Establishing efficient supply chains to facilitate trade.

These initiatives contribute to the overarching goal of shared prosperity across Eurasia.
