Araghchi’s Kabul Visit: A Major Leap Forward for Iran-Afghanistan Relations, Says Ministry

Tehran, IRNA – In a recent statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei emphasized the importance of negotiations between neighboring states, particularly between Iran and Afghanistan, to address mutual concerns and interests.

During an interview with IRNA, Baghaei highlighted the significance of Araghchi’s visit to Kabul, marking him as the first Iranian foreign minister to do so in recent years. This visit is seen as a crucial step in strengthening the Iran-Afghanistan relationship. He noted that such diplomatic interactions are vital for finding solutions to shared challenges.

Baghaei addressed Iran’s concerns regarding its water rights to the Hirmand (Helmand) River, stating that Afghanistan’s caretaker government has committed to adhering to the Afghan-Iranian Helmand River-Water Treaty of 1973. This includes respecting Iran’s water share while upholding Islamic and ethical principles.

On the topic of Afghan migrants in Iran, Baghaei mentioned that officials in Kabul have praised the hospitality shown by Iranians over the past 4 to 5 decades. He expressed optimism that collaborative efforts would result in effective measures to tackle the issue of illegal migrants in Iran.

Furthermore, both parties underscored the necessity of enhancing cooperation to combat terrorism, particularly against the Daesh terrorist group. Baghaei noted that Iranian and Afghan officials engaged in constructive discussions aimed at advancing economic and trade exchanges. The economic delegation accompanying FM Araghchi played a crucial role in identifying new opportunities for collaboration.
