Araghchi Raises Alarm on Unilateral Coercive Measures: A Call for Global Cooperation

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has voiced significant concern regarding the unilateral coercive measures imposed by certain developed nations. His remarks came during the High-level Meeting on the Global Development Initiative, where he emphasized the need for a united approach to foster global development.

Araghchi’s address highlighted the troubling trend of developed countries failing to meet their longstanding commitments while simultaneously enforcing policies that hinder the progress of developing nations. He stated, “It is deeply worrying that instead of fulfilling their long-standing commitments, some developed countries continue to implement unilateral coercive measures and protectionist policies against developing nations.”

These unilateral actions have far-reaching consequences, including:

• Violation of fundamental human rights in targeted nations
• Obstruction of economic growth initiatives
• Increased poverty levels
• Challenges to sustainable development

As a member of the Group of Friends of the Global Development Initiative, the Islamic Republic of Iran recognizes this platform as crucial for enhancing cooperation and solidarity aimed at development. Araghchi emphasized that the challenges faced by developing countries are deeply rooted in structural inequalities within the global economic, financial, and trade systems. He remarked, “Today’s meeting is both timely and essential.”

One of the most pressing issues for policymakers in developing nations is the need to eradicate poverty. Araghchi pointed out that hunger, malnutrition, and food insecurity are escalating, with the threat of famine looming worldwide. He stated, “Eradicating poverty remains the greatest challenge for policymakers in many developing nations.”

Additionally, he addressed the growing digital divide, particularly concerning emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. His call for inclusive, transparent, and fair governance of digital technologies underscored the necessity for the full and effective participation of developing countries in this realm.

Araghchi noted that the challenges faced by these nations extend beyond economic concerns. He pointed to the deteriorating situation in West Asia, specifically mentioning the ongoing genocide in Gaza. He asserted that this situation reflects the international community’s failure to uphold international law and prevent crimes against humanity. “Foreign occupation and aggression, inequality, and injustice can reverse developmental gains and destabilize entire regions and the world,” he warned.

In light of these issues, Araghchi stressed the importance of recommitting to the principles of multilateral cooperation and rejecting unilateralism, which he views as a significant threat to global peace, security, and development. He stated, “Under such circumstances, it is more imperative than ever that countries recommit to the principles of multilateral cooperation.”

Furthermore, he highlighted the role of the Global Development Initiative in promoting the aspirations of developing countries. This initiative aims to empower these nations to take a more substantial role in shaping the global economic order while fostering an environment conducive to sustainable development.

As Araghchi concluded his remarks, he reiterated the gravity of the situation in West Asia, emphasizing that the ongoing crimes in Gaza pose a threat not only to regional peace but also to global development. “The grave situation in West Asia cannot be ignored, particularly the ongoing crimes in Gaza, which threaten peace and development in our region and beyond,” he cautioned.
