55 Iranian Hotels Compete for Prestigious Green Label Award: A Showcase of Sustainable Hospitality
In a significant step towards promoting sustainable tourism, a total of 55 hotels from 15 provinces, along with one hotel from Kish Free Zone, are set to compete for the prestigious Green Label for Iranian Hotels. This initiative, spearheaded by Mohammad Jahanshahi, the Secretary of the National Committee for Nature Tourism, aims to enhance sustainability indicators within the tourism sector.
According to Jahanshahi, the Green Label award, developed by the Tourism Department of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage in collaboration with the Iranian Hoteliers Associations, is currently in the judging phase. This phase is being conducted alongside the Department of the Environment and a panel of experts to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the participating hotels.
“Nearly 60 hotels from various provinces and Kish Island have registered and are competing in this event,” Jahanshahi stated. The award will be based on the hotels’ performance across four critical sustainability indicators:
- Optimizing water consumption
- Energy efficiency (including electricity and gas)
- Waste management
- Social interactions with a focus on the local community
He noted that provinces such as Mazandaran, Khorasan Razavi, Tehran, and Fars have shown the most participation in this inaugural competition. Additionally, three hotel groups have notably engaged in this initiative.
According to Jahanshahi, the green hotel label has emerged as a significant achievement in global tourism over the past two decades. It is recognized as a crucial element in enhancing the social responsibilities of the tourism industry towards both the environment and local communities, alongside economic considerations.
“This event showcases a diverse range of hotels across the country,” he added, “ranging from those with local and traditional structures to eco-hotels and modern, innovative establishments.” The processes of this event involve collaboration not only with the Department of the Environment but also with the Iranian Green Management Association and various academic figures and tourism experts.
Earlier in his remarks, Jahanshahi emphasized the importance of bolstering green tourism in the country. He expressed a commitment to expanding sustainable practices within both businesses and tourism destinations, stating, “Our efforts are focused on optimizing resources, increasing productivity in the tourism supply chain, and fostering engagement with human and natural communities around the industry.”
The official also highlighted that this event is being organized as part of the special programs commemorating World Tourism Day. It represents a continuation of the efforts made in recent years aimed at improving sustainability indicators within Iran’s tourism sector.
Jahanshahi urged participants from the hotel industry to engage in this initiative. He believes that such participation can not only enhance the value placed on resource optimization but also strengthen the social responsibilities of the tourism industry throughout the country.
In conclusion, the Green Label for Iranian Hotels is poised to become a landmark event in the drive for sustainability in tourism. By focusing on resource consumption, energy efficiency, and community engagement, this initiative aims to set a new standard within the industry.
As the competition unfolds, stakeholders in the tourism sector are encouraged to reflect on their practices and consider how they can contribute to a more sustainable future. The collective efforts of hotels across Iran will play a vital role in shaping the landscape of eco-friendly tourism, ensuring that it aligns with the global movement towards sustainable practices.
