40th International Fajr Music Festival Celebrates Legacy: Veteran Musicians Honored at Spectacular Opening Ceremony

The 40th International Fajr Music Festival has officially commenced, bringing together a diverse array of musical talent and celebrating the rich heritage of Iranian music. This prestigious festival, known for its dedication to cultural expression, kicked off with a vibrant opening ceremony at the Boys’ Music Conservatory in Tehran.

During the event, Reza Mahdavi, the festival’s secretary, emphasized the importance of honoring the late Master Fereydoun Shahbazian, a notable alumnus of the conservatory. He stated, “Let us honor the memory of Master Fereydoun Shahbazian, who was also a graduate of this conservatory and left valuable works in the contemporary history of music through his learned skills. I hope the graduates of the Music Conservatory appreciate this precious legacy.”

The ceremony also included a heartfelt tribute to esteemed composers Hassan Riahi and Seyyed Hamid Shahangian, who have significantly contributed to Iranian music and revolutionary anthems. A tribute video was screened in their honor, followed by a special recognition on stage.

The celebration included a special 80th birthday tribute for both Riahi and Shahangian, along with impressive performances by talented students from the Boys’ Music Conservatory. This segment of the event highlighted the festival’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of musicians.

The 40th International Fajr Music Festival is organized by the Deputy of Artistic Affairs of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, in collaboration with several cultural institutions including the Music Office of the Culture Ministry, the Iran Music Association, and the Rudaki Foundation. Its objectives are multifaceted:

  1. Showcasing and honoring the finest works of Iranian musicians.
  2. Promoting the art of music and enhancing the audience’s taste and listening culture.
  3. Preserving national identity rooted in religious and Iranian teachings.
  4. Supporting creative art, particularly ideas and performances from the younger generation.
  5. Identifying and strengthening the quality of form and content across various music genres.

This year, the festival is hosting six international musicians and bands from countries including Turkey, Spain, India, the Netherlands, Tunisia, and Armenia. Additionally, over 100 Iranian bands comprising more than 1,400 musicians are participating, showcasing the festival’s widespread appeal and the rich diversity of musical talent.

The festival will unfold in two sections: competitive and non-competitive, running until February 17 in Tehran. This structure allows for a broad spectrum of musical expression and engagement, ensuring that both established and emerging artists have a platform to share their work.

As the festival progresses, attendees can look forward to a variety of performances and events that highlight the vibrancy of Iranian music and its cultural significance.
