36th Tehran International Book Fair: 2,363 Domestic Publishers Set to Showcase Literary Treasures

The 36th Tehran International Book Fair (TIBF) is poised to be an exciting event this year, as more publishers from the general category have expressed interest in participating compared to last year. Ebrahim Heidari, the spokesperson and deputy director of the fair, shared this information during a recent press conference held at the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in Tehran.

Heidari highlighted the impressive growth in publisher participation, stating, “Due to the approach of maximum publisher participation, we had a significant increase in the number of publishers this year. In the domestic section of the fair, 2,363 publishers are attending,” as quoted by Mehr. This surge indicates a vibrant publishing landscape in Iran and reflects the growing interest in literature and cultural exchange.

This year’s fair is particularly noteworthy as it welcomes Iraq as the special guest, aiming to strengthen the cultural ties between the two nations. Heidari emphasized the importance of cultural diplomacy, noting that this collaboration could lead to enhanced cultural understanding and exchange.

In addition to fostering international relationships, the fair will host various cultural and religious programs. Heidari mentioned that they received approximately 2,300 requests for cultural events, a testament to the book fair’s status as the largest cultural event in the country. The focus will be on ensuring the quality and significance of these programs to create a meaningful experience for attendees.

Among the new initiatives this year is the Tehran Publishing Fellowship Program, which aims to support Iranian works and assist in their translation into other languages. Heidari reported that nearly 80 foreign guests and 50 domestic guests have already registered for this program. The initiative will also include specialized sessions focusing on children’s and adolescent literature, highlighting a commitment to nurturing young readers.

The Tehran Publishing Fellowship represents a collaboration between publishers, authors, and literary agents aimed at facilitating the sale of book rights. This program not only seeks to enhance Iran’s presence in the global publishing arena but also emphasizes the importance of children’s and young adult literature.

Despite the rising costs, Heidari noted their goal to reduce the fair’s overall expenses by 30 to 40 percent compared to last year. This reduction will be achieved through increased subsidies and careful management of operational costs, ensuring that the fair remains accessible to a wide audience.

Recognized as a national heritage event, the Tehran International Book Fair not only revitalizes and enriches the cultural landscape of Iran but also attracts cultural figures and book lovers from around the globe. The fair has become a landmark event in West Asia after 35 successful editions, drawing millions of visitors annually, including university students, scholars, and their families.

The significance of the TIBF cannot be overstated, as it currently stands as the most important cultural event in Iran. Visitors can expect a diverse array of materials from foreign publishers, with offerings primarily in English and Arabic; however, titles in French, German, Chinese, Korean, Russian, and Japanese will also be available, catering to a wide range of literary tastes.

Mark your calendars! The 36th Tehran International Book Fair will take place from May 7 to 17 at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla. This year’s theme, “Let’s Read for Iran,” reflects a collective call to promote reading and literature within the nation.

In summary, the upcoming Tehran International Book Fair promises to be a remarkable event, showcasing the richness of Iranian literature and the potential for cultural exchange. With an impressive lineup of publishers and an array of cultural programs, attendees can look forward to an enriching experience that fosters a love for reading and literature.
