The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, celebrated on October 13, promotes global awareness and resilience against hazards like floods and earthquakes. Iran, prone to various disasters, has allocated 540 trillion rials ($483 million) for enhancing resilience this year. An international initiative, supported by Japan, aims to develop flood hazard maps and empower local communities. Urgent calls for increased DRR funding highlight the necessity of integrating risk assessments into public and private investments to mitigate future disaster impacts.
Iranian Science Minister Hossein Simaei-Sarraf is enhancing international academic partnerships through discussions with the presidents of Uzbekistan and Slovakia at the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand. Uzbekistan’s President Mirziyoyev expressed interest in strengthening cultural and scientific ties, while Slovak President Pellegrini acknowledged Iran’s strategic importance. Simaei-Sarraf also met with the Filipino education commissioner to discuss women’s representation in academia and student exchanges. The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) is enhancing disaster preparedness through extensive training for about 85,000 rescuers and rapid response teams across various provinces, including Tehran and Isfahan. The program features three modules: city-level training for relief workers, provincial training for rescuers, and specialized instruction for rapid response teams. Recently, three trainers completed their training in essential areas and will conduct local sessions. Additionally, the IRCS held a Rescue and Relief Olympiad to improve the physical fitness and operational skills of rescuers. These initiatives aim to build a resilient community capable of effectively responding to disasters.
