Massive Tribute: A Historic Farewell to Martyrs Nasrallah and Safieddine

Massive crowds from Lebanon and around the globe are gathering in Beirut for the historic funeral procession of Hezbollah leaders Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and Sayyed Hashem Safieddine. The two leaders were tragically killed in an Israeli bombardment in late 2024. As the day unfolds, the atmosphere is charged with emotion, underscoring the profound impact of their leadership on the region.

Despite the chilly weather conditions since early morning, thousands of individuals, including women, children, and the elderly, are making their way to Beirut. This influx is causing significant traffic congestion on key routes leading to the capital, particularly on the Sidon-Beirut and Bekaa-Beirut roads. The presence of mourners carrying pictures of the martyrs and banners with memorable quotes from Nasrallah adds to the solemnity of the occasion.

To ensure the safety and order of the event, units from the army and internal security forces have been deployed throughout the city. The Hezbollah-affiliated al-Manar television station has set up multiple screens at Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium in the Bir Hassan area, allowing mourners to follow the proceedings closely.

All logistical and technical preparations for the funeral ceremony have been meticulously organized. The funeral is set to commence at 1:00 PM local time with a Quran recitation, followed by the national anthem and Hezbollah’s anthem, as reported by Press TV. The coffins of the late leaders will be transported in a specially designated vehicle, culminating in a speech from the current Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem before the procession moves to the burial site.

This funeral is anticipated to be an extraordinary event, with approximately 70 countries confirming their official presence through diplomatic delegations, current and former parliamentarians, ministers, and notable political figures. The outpouring of support extends beyond Lebanon, as numerous individuals from various political and religious factions and resistance groups have also arrived to pay their respects to the fallen leaders.

  • Thousands from Arab and Muslim countries, including Iraq, Yemen, Iran, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Turkey, are participating in the funeral.
  • The event signifies a pivotal moment in Lebanon’s history and that of the West Asia region.
  • Airlines have reported a surge in flights to Beirut, with Iraqi Airways and Middle East Airlines increasing their services due to heightened demand.

The Lebanese Army and Internal Security Forces have implemented stringent security measures in preparation for the funeral, deploying 4,000 troops to ensure public safety. Furthermore, over 25,000 discipline squad members and 4,000 event organizers are on-site to manage the movement of the mourning crowds. Four field hospitals have been established near Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium, along the funeral route, the burial site, and the old Beirut airport road, ensuring medical assistance is readily available. Additionally, more than 70 ambulances and medical teams are stationed along the procession route.

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was tragically killed in an Israeli bombardment of southern Beirut on September 27, 2024. Israeli jets unleashed 85 tons of explosives on the region, leveling six residential buildings after a week-long bombing campaign that affected many areas from southern Lebanon to Beirut. Sayyed Hashem Safieddine was also assassinated in an Israeli attack on October 3, 2024. The ongoing Israeli assaults led Hezbollah to postpone the funeral ceremonies for both leaders.

In a show of solidarity, a four-member delegation representing the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, is in attendance at the funeral. A written message from the Leader is expected to be delivered by Hojjtoleslam Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini, who is part of this delegation.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who has arrived in Lebanon to participate in the ceremony, stated, “Today’s funeral procession will show that the Resistance and Hezbollah are alive and they remain loyal to their cause.” He expressed optimism about the future, saying, “As the Resistance has achieved many victories so far, God willing, the final victory will also be achieved.” Araghchi noted that there is a significant interest among Iranians to attend the funeral of these “two heroes.”

Additionally, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf expressed gratitude to the people of Lebanon and Gaza upon his arrival. He remarked, “Today, we are witnessing stability, security, and pinning hope on the progress of Lebanon, and these achievements are owed to the resistance and resilience of Hezbollah and the people of this country.”

This historic funeral procession not only commemorates the lives of its leaders but also showcases the enduring spirit of Hezbollah and the Resistance in the face of adversity.
