IAF Set to Showcase Park Chan-wook’s Captivating Film ‘No Other Choice’

Mark your calendars for an exciting cinematic experience! The highly anticipated 2025 South Korean satirical black comedy thriller film, No Other Choice, will be showcased at the Iranian Artists Forum (IAF) in Tehran. Co-written, produced, and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Park Chan-wook, this film promises to blend humor with drama in a unique narrative that explores the darker side of contemporary work culture.

Set to screen on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the IAF’s Nasseri Hall, this 140-minute film will be presented with Persian subtitles, according to a report by ILNA.

No Other Choice is based on the novel The Ax by Donald Westlake and features a stellar cast, including:

  • Lee Byung-hun
  • Son Ye-jin
  • Park Hee-soon
  • Lee Sung-min
  • Yeom Hye-ran
  • Cha Seung-won

This film marks the second adaptation of Westlake’s gripping story, following the 2005 French-language film The Axe, directed by Costa-Gavras.

The plot centers around a desperate paper industry expert who resorts to extreme measures to eliminate his competition, hoping to secure the job that will sustain his family’s lifestyle. In this dark fable, Park Chan-wook masterfully portrays the ruthless nature of modern work culture and the desperate quest for material comfort.

Lee Byung-hun delivers a remarkable performance as Man-soo, a middle-aged husband and father who finds himself laid off from a company to which he has dedicated decades of his life. As his unemployment stretches on, Man-soo’s actions become increasingly desperate, leading him to commit outrageous and absurd acts of violence. Park’s signature extravagant style shines through, blending pitch-black comedy with a gripping narrative.

No Other Choice made its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in August, where it received widespread critical acclaim. It then had its domestic premiere as the opening film of the 30th Busan International Film Festival in September. The film has also been selected as South Korea’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards.

Park Chan-wook, now 62, is a renowned South Korean filmmaker and former film critic, celebrated for his distinctive storytelling style that fuses elements of crime, mystery, and thriller with various genres. His films are particularly noted for their stunning cinematography, intricate framing, and dark humor, often exploring brutal and thought-provoking subject matter.
