In a significant move towards enhancing scientific collaboration, Iran’s scientific counselor for East Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, Alireza Pourtavakol, recently met with the management team from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). This meeting focused on establishing stronger academic and research partnerships between Iran and Malaysia.

On Saturday, Pourtavakol engaged with key figures from UTM, including:

  • Nor Ruwaida Jamian – Head of Malaysia–Japan International Institute of Technology
  • Hafiza Binti Abas – Head of the Department for Artificial Intelligence
  • Basheer Al-haimi – Senior Lecturer at the Azman Hashim International Business School (AHIBS)

During this crucial meeting, both parties discussed various strategies to enhance international collaborations and expand interactions between their respective universities. Pourtavakol emphasized the importance of:

  • Conducting joint scientific and research projects
  • Establishing a collaborative research center
  • Exchanging students and professors
  • Granting reciprocal scholarships
  • Publishing joint scientific articles
  • Holding short-term professional scientific courses
  • Industrializing products of knowledge-based companies

Recent Initiatives in Academic Cooperation

In 2024, the Iranian-Malaysian universities’ fall camp took place from November 3 to 11 at Malaya University in Kuala Lumpur. This event saw the participation of 50 Iranian students and professors in the third joint international school organized by Iranian and Malaysian universities.

This camp was a result of an agreement signed between the University of Isfahan and UM University of Malaysia during the D-8 meeting in October 2023. The theme of the third joint school was ‘Training Young Global Scientists and Leaders to Address Modern International Challenges.’

The course comprised various collective programs aimed at promoting student-scientific diplomacy, as reported by IRNA. Key topics covered included:

  • The impact of artificial intelligence on security and privacy
  • Integrated water resources management
  • Artistic heritage and Islamic civilization
  • Sustainable governance in climate change and crisis management

Memorandums of Understanding Signed

In October 2024, further advancements in academic cooperation were marked by the signing of memorandums of understanding (MOUs) between Sharif University branch of the Academic Center for Education, Culture & Research (ACECR) and Khajeh Nasir (K.N.) Toosi University of Technology with the University of Malaysia and Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), respectively.

During an online meeting, Mohsen Mardani from Sharif University and Mohammad Yusuf from the University of Malaysia formalized their MOU, focusing on:

  • Expanding cooperation in international collaborative research activities
  • Sharing technology

Both officials underscored the necessity of creating a suitable platform to plan and develop joint ventures in key sectors, including:

  • Technical engineering
  • Agriculture
  • Health

Additionally, they agreed to establish specialized working groups in these fields to formulate short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans.

Yusuf expressed Malaysia’s eagerness to facilitate the expansion of knowledge-based activities, projecting optimism that ongoing cooperation would pave the way for future joint initiatives rooted in innovation and creativity.

Another significant MOU was signed on October 3rd between Amir-Reza Shahani, president of K.N. Toosi University of Technology, and Ho Chin Kuan, vice-chancellor of APU University of Malaysia, as reported by Mehr news agency. The officials reiterated their commitment to enhancing cooperation between their institutions and launching joint Master’s programs in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cyber Security.

This growing partnership marks a pivotal moment in fostering academic ties between Iran and Malaysia, paving the way for collaborative innovations in various fields of science and technology.
