This initiative marks a significant period for raising awareness about the role of health insurance in safeguarding the population’s health and financial well-being.

The universal health coverage (UHC) law, which took effect on October 25, 1994, aims to address various critical issues. These include:

  • Promoting public health and preventing diseases
  • Supporting patients with rare and hard-to-treat illnesses
  • Ensuring social justice in access to health services
  • Encouraging innovation and modern technologies in healthcare

Each day of Health Insurance Week is dedicated to a specific topic that underlines the significance of health insurance:

  1. Saturday, October 25: Health insurance; financial protection of the people, sustainable community health
  2. Sunday, October 26: Health insurance; prevention, achieving justice in health
  3. Monday, October 27: Health insurance; supporting patients with hard-to-treat illnesses, life expectancy
  4. Tuesday, October 28: Health insurance; healthy family, empowered society
  5. Wednesday, October 29: Health insurance; transparency and innovation; a bright future

Currently, over 50 percent of Iran’s population is covered by health insurance. However, to enhance service quality and reduce out-of-pocket expenses, the organization requires the support of the government and parliament. Key necessary actions include:

  • Enhancing family physician programs
  • Creating effective referral systems
  • Expanding the use of electronic health records

Iran is recognized as a regional leader in health systems, with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) director for the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) acknowledging the country’s strides in expanding healthcare access and universal health coverage. Hanan Balkhi commended Iran for:

  • Expanding primary health care services
  • Increasing access to health coverage in rural areas
  • Maintaining high vaccination rates
  • Reducing maternal and newborn mortality rates

These accomplishments position Iran as a successful role model within the region, according to reports from the health ministry. WHO EMRO is collaborating with Iranian regulatory institutions to achieve regulatory maturity level 3 in the pharmaceutical regulatory system. The Iranian delegation, led by Zafarqandi, participated in the WHA78, which focused on the 2025 theme ‘One World for Health’. This meeting brought together high-level representatives from various countries to discuss pressing health challenges. This year’s gathering is particularly crucial as Member States face emerging threats and significant shifts in the global health landscape and international development.
