New Fishing Piers Set to Transform Abadan’s Tourism Landscape, Lawmaker Affirms

TEHRAN—Seyyed Mohammad Molavi, an MP representing Abadan in the Iranian parliament, has recently emphasized the potential of marine tourism in the Khuzestan province. He believes that activating fishing piers, jet ski rentals, jet boats, and other water sports along the Bahmanshir and Arvandrud rivers could significantly enhance tourism in the region. Speaking at the coordination meeting of the Health Tourism Conference held at the Arvand Free Zone Organization, he highlighted Iran’s current position, ranking 73rd out of 115 countries in the tourism development index, as reported by Mehr news agency.

Molavi pointed out that the Arvand Free Zone Organization is one of Khuzestan’s key assets and should be leveraged to promote tourism effectively. He underlined the importance of aligning tourism initiatives with the local ecosystem to ensure sustainable development.

In his address, he outlined several critical aspects for prioritizing tourism in Abadan and Khorramshahr:

  • Marine Tourism as a Central Focus: Molavi argued that “marine tourism is the pulse of tourism in this region.” He questioned the appeal of Abadan to visitors, asking, “Does anyone come to Abadan for good weather, to see farms or industry?”
  • Activation of Water Sports: To attract tourists, Molavi stated that “fishing piers, jet skis, jet boats, and other water sports should be activated in the Bahmanshir and Arvandrud rivers.”
  • Hotel Management Training: He called for specialized hotel management courses to be held by the Homa Hotel Group, which are essential for enhancing the quality of hotels in the region.
  • Collaboration with HEGTA: Molavi requested the Tourism Group of the Social Security Organization (HEGTA) to partake in establishing a sea line between Abadan and an Iraqi port, along with activating water taxis.
  • Human Resource Development: He emphasized that developing human resources is crucial for progress, advocating for specialized tourism courses for personnel in the Free Zone Organization.
  • Health Tourism Expansion: He reiterated that cities like Abadan and Khorramshahr should not merely serve as transit points for Iraqi tourists. Instead, a plan should be devised to offer comprehensive treatment services in the area.

Molavi also noted that the Arvandrud and Bahmanshir rivers, in addition to health tourism, present excellent opportunities for boosting the tourism economy and creating jobs.
