Discover Khaf: A Magnet for Foreign Tourists Exploring Rich Historical Treasures

TEHRAN—The second group of European tourists has arrived in Khaf county, Khorasan Razavi province, marking a significant moment for the local tourism sector. This visit, part of a broader initiative to enhance tourism, coincided with the Iranian month of Mehr, which began on September 23. During this exciting tour, 15 Greek tourists explored the rich cultural and historical tapestry of Khaf, showcasing the area’s potential as a prime tourist destination.

Mahmoud Ba’aqideh, the Head of Khaf Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts Department, shared insights about the visit, highlighting that the tourists engaged with various attractions and experiences:

• Workshops: Tourists visited local workshops dedicated to producing and selling traditional handicrafts.
• Local Music: The tour featured performances of local music, enhancing cultural immersion.
• Asbads: Ancient windmills, known as Asbads, were a key point of interest, showcasing unique architectural styles.

The Asbads represent a masterpiece of Iranian architecture, particularly in the eastern regions, where they harness wind power for grinding cereals. Ba’aqideh noted a remarkable five-fold increase in foreign tourist visits to Khaf compared to last year. He stated, “Given the restoration of significant historical monuments and the development of tourism infrastructure, the conditions for the presence of domestic and foreign tourists in this county have improved.”

On October 10, a diverse group of 15 foreign tourists from countries such as the UK, Australia, India, Canada, and Sri Lanka also toured Khaf, exploring notable historical sites including:

• Nashtifan Asbads: A significant example of the region’s windmill architecture.
• Ghiasieh School: A historical educational institution located in Khargerd village.

Khaf county, while lesser-known, is rich with historical significance, boasting over 300 identified historical sites. Among these:

• 105 sites: Have been officially recognized as national heritage sites.
• UNESCO Recognition: Two sites, including the Khaf windmills and the historical city of Zozan, are on the UNESCO tentative list.

Of the 200 Asbads identified in both urban and rural areas of Khaf, only 130 remain standing, with 70 having succumbed to time and neglect. However, about 130 Asbads still retain their original form, and some continue to be operational for wheat grinding and flour production. This restoration effort is a key focus of the Khaf Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department.

Constructed with clay, wood, and straw, these windmills, known locally as Asbads, symbolize the ingenuity of ancient Iranians in adapting to their environment, turning challenges into opportunities. The development of Asbads was driven by the region’s strong and consistent 120-day winds that sweep through the eastern and southeastern parts of the Iranian Plateau from late May to late September.
