Isfahan Children’s Film Festival Expands Nationwide: Exciting Events Across Multiple Provinces!
The 37th International Film Festival for Children and Youth is set to kick off on Saturday, showcasing films across 19 provinces in Iran. This year, Isfahan will serve as the primary host city, welcoming audiences to experience a rich tapestry of cultural entertainment.
Organized to promote cultural exchange and artistic expression, the festival’s venues span several provinces, including:
- East Azarbaijan
- Bushehr
- Tehran
- Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari
- Zanjan
- Semnan
- Khorasan Razavi
- South Khorasan
- Qom
- Kermanshah
- Kerman
- Golestan
- Gilan
- Mazandaran
- Markazi
- Hamedan
- Hormozgan
- Yazd
This festival returns to provincial venues after a six-year hiatus, which saw the event mostly confined to Isfahan and only limited virtual screenings during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under the direction of Hamed Jafari, the festival will run until October 8 and will feature three primary sections:
- National Competition: This section includes feature films, shorts, and animations vying for the prestigious Golden Plaque.
- International Competition: Showcasing films produced after 2024 from around the globe, this section aims to foster cross-cultural dialogue.
- Special Section: Focusing on themes such as children affected by war, especially in regions like Gaza and others, this section underscores the festival’s commitment to addressing pressing social issues through cinema.
In the national competition, filmmakers will be evaluated based on artistic merit, innovation, and storytelling prowess. The international section, on the other hand, aims to highlight the diverse landscape of global children’s cinema, promoting understanding across cultures.
The special section emphasizes the experiences of children in conflict and hardship, demonstrating the festival’s dedication to social narratives. Over the years, the festival has introduced new competitive categories aimed at recognizing:
- The most innovative and creative films
- Films with significant economic potential in related industries
- Works that can expand into other sectors, such as digital media and virtual platforms
Since its inception in 1982, the festival has evolved into a vital cultural institution, with 36 successful editions. Notably, 21 editions have been held in Isfahan, alongside six in Tehran, five in Hamedan, and one in Kerman. The festival has frequently taken place in October, although there have been instances of other months being selected.
To better connect with the new generation of children and adolescents who have grown up with digital technology, the festival has implemented significant policy reforms since its 32nd edition. These reforms include:
- The introduction of four new competitive sections
- Awards that recognize innovation, economic potential, and cultural impact
- Categories for digital content, such as web series
These initiatives aim to elevate filmmaking not just as an art form but also as a potential driver of economic growth and cultural diplomacy, highlighting the importance of building wealth within the film industry and nurturing a new generation of filmmakers.
Moreover, the festival has launched initiatives such as the Olympiad of Youth Filmmakers, conducted in collaboration with the Farabi Cinema Foundation and the Iranian Young Cinema Society. This initiative is designed to support and empower young filmmakers.
In addition, a new video library has been established to enhance Iran’s presence in the global children’s and youth cinema market. This development is aligned with the festival’s strategic vision of international collaboration.
Over the past year, Iran has signed numerous memoranda of understanding and cooperation agreements with various countries, including India, Serbia, Armenia, and Pakistan. These agreements aim to bolster co-productions and foster cultural exchange, reinforcing the festival’s international reach and influence.
As the festival unfolds, it promises to be a vibrant platform for celebrating the creativity and resilience of filmmakers while addressing vital issues affecting children and youth worldwide.
