Israel Launches Devastating Offensive on Gaza City: A Closer Look at the Impact
The situation in Gaza is becoming increasingly dire as the Israeli military has declared Gaza City a “dangerous combat zone.” This announcement effectively ends the temporary pauses that allowed limited food deliveries to the besieged northern region, raising concerns about a large-scale displacement of civilians. Approximately one million Palestinians are currently trapped in Gaza’s largest urban area after enduring nearly two years of relentless bombardment and siege.
In the days leading up to this declaration, Israeli artillery and warplanes intensified their attacks on Gaza City’s outskirts, particularly in the neighborhoods of Zeitoun and Sabra. Recent satellite imagery reveals that vast sections of these areas have been reduced to rubble in just a few weeks.
Feryal Ahmed, a survivor of an Israeli airstrike in Zeitoun, recounted her harrowing experience: “I threw on my prayer gown and called for my children, but the rubble and dust made it impossible to see them.” Civil defense teams report that hundreds of individuals remain trapped beneath collapsed buildings, with entire families buried alive.
The devastation has sparked concerns among human rights organizations, who describe the Israeli military’s actions as a deliberate campaign aimed at forcing civilians to move southward. Israeli tanks have already advanced deeper into Sabra, and reports indicate that the security cabinet has approved a broader strategy to encircle Gaza City, compelling civilians to flee while systematically demolishing neighborhoods block by block.
During a visit to troops stationed near Gaza on August 21, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed his commitment to the Gaza City offensive despite widespread international condemnation. This escalation comes even after Hamas expressed willingness to accept a ceasefire proposal, which mediators claimed was “98 percent of [U.S. envoy Steve] Witkoff’s plan.” However, Israel rejected this offer, opting instead to resume military operations.
Analysts and human rights organizations argue that Israel’s actions reflect a lack of interest in pursuing a negotiated resolution to the conflict. Many Palestinians fear this initiative, coupled with mass displacement, may signify an attempt at ethnic cleansing under the guise of reconstruction.
The reality on the ground in Gaza has become unbearable. Civilians report experiencing constant shelling, sniper fire targeting residential areas, and families trapped beneath the rubble of their homes. Armed resistance groups continue to release footage of their attacks against Israeli forces in Zeitoun. However, for ordinary families, the choice remains stark: stay under bombardment or flee into overcrowded camps that offer no real safety or security.
Several European governments, including Ireland, Spain, and Norway, have condemned Israel’s military plans and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Yet, as Netanyahu appears determined to pursue occupation, and with Washington outlining governance plans for the post-war period, Israeli forces continue their daily advance.
