The ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip is intensifying, as reports indicate that the region is grappling not only with the devastating effects of war but also with a severe famine. The Government Media Office in Gaza has voiced grave concerns, stating that starvation is worsening as restrictions imposed by the occupying regime on food and aid deliveries continue unabated. They have accused Israel of perpetrating a systematic starvation crime against the population of the Gaza Strip.

On August 22, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) officially declared a famine in Gaza City and its surrounding areas. This alarming announcement has raised urgent warnings that the disaster could extend to Deir al-Balah in central Gaza and Khan Younis in the south, putting the lives of the entire population of 2.4 million individuals at grave risk.

This declaration arrives amidst mounting evidence that the Israeli occupation regime is employing starvation as a tactic of warfare. Data collected between July 1 and August 15 indicate that the three critical thresholds of famine—extreme food deprivation, acute malnutrition, and hunger-related deaths—have been breached.

Since March, Gaza has faced an unimaginable three consecutive months without any deliveries of food or medicine. Although thousands of trucks belonging to the World Health Organization (WHO) are positioned at the border, the Israeli regime has consistently prohibited their entry.

Despite repeated warnings from the UN, the occupying regime has dismissed these concerns.

Tom Fletcher, the UN’s Emergency Relief Coordinator, has pointed out the tragic irony of aid trucks being stranded within sight of starving individuals. He remarked, “It is a famine openly promoted by some Israeli leaders as a weapon of war.”

Grave accusations are mounting against Israel, with organizations such as Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Doctors Without Borders condemning the use of starvation as a method of warfare. Greenpeace has called for an immediate cessation of this “deliberate starvation,” while the IBA’s Human Rights Institute has condemned the practice as an inhumane method of warfare that constitutes a serious violation of international law.

As the crisis deepens, Palestinians continue to suffer from hunger, illness, and despair. Tragically, an increasing number of children are losing their lives, while mothers are left scavenging for scraps of food. Aid distribution points have turned into scenes of violence, resembling shooting ranges for occupation troops.
