Iran Stays Resolute: Emphasizing Resistance and Advocating for Regional Dialogue

Ali Larijani, the newly appointed Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of the Islamic Republic of Iran, recently shared insights during an interview with Lebanese Al Mayadeen TV. This discussion took place on the second day of his visit to Lebanon, where he engaged in high-level meetings with the country’s political leadership. His tour also included a stop in Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussions in Baghdad.

During the interview, Dr. Larijani emphasized the strong, strategic, and historic ties that Iran shares with both Lebanon and Iraq. He stated, “We have strong, strategic, and historic ties with both Lebanon and Iraq. These relations span centuries, and we regularly engage in dialogue on issues of mutual concern.” He elaborated that discussions in Baghdad centered around strategic cooperation, culminating in a security agreement aimed at achieving safety, stability, and security for both nations. “The core point of this agreement,” he noted, “is our shared effort to achieve safety, stability, and security for both countries. This is the general outlook of the Islamic Republic toward regional cooperation.”

In Lebanon, Dr. Larijani met with key political figures, including the president, the parliament speaker, and the prime minister. He affirmed, “Our position is clear. Lebanon is a brotherly nation to us. Our relationship is not new; it has deep roots and history. In all circumstances, we have stood by Lebanon and its resistance. We see resistance as a great asset for the countries of this region, whether in Lebanon or elsewhere.”

  • Iran’s Respect for Resistance: Dr. Larijani highlighted that Iran respects those who defend their homeland, stating, “When there is resistance in a country and people engage in jihad and defend their nation, we must honor and value them above those who remain seated.”
  • Non-Sectarian Support: He firmly responded to criticisms of sectarianism, stating, “Resistance is for everyone. It is not confined to Shia or Sunni. We support Hamas, a Sunni resistance movement, and Hezbollah, a Shia resistance force.”
  • Inclusivity in Resistance: Dr. Larijani noted that Lebanon’s resistance comprises both Christians and Muslims, emphasizing the broad support for resistance efforts.

Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Dr. Larijani acknowledged Berri’s political acumen and importance in the resistance movement. He stated, “Mr. Berri is one of the great political figures of Lebanon and the Arab world. He is politically astute, deeply experienced, and a key pillar of the resistance.”

Dr. Larijani elaborated on the strategic failures of Israel in its actions against Iran, asserting, “They planned this for 14 years and failed. Netanyahu wanted to incite unrest, but even the Iranian opposition stood with the state.” He emphasized that Iran’s resilience and strength in the face of external threats have only grown stronger.

During his meetings in Beirut, Dr. Larijani articulated Iran’s stance on non-interference in the domestic affairs of other nations, stating, “We do not interfere in the affairs of other countries, and we believe states can make appropriate decisions after consulting diverse political groups.” He further acknowledged the unique political dynamics of Lebanon and the importance of dialogue.

Discussing the significance of his visit to Lebanon and Iraq, Dr. Larijani explained, “I chose Iraq and Lebanon because they are our close friends with whom we have cooperated for many years. We have old, deep relations with them.” He also hinted at the possibility of restoring ties with Syria, depending on the actions of the current Syrian government.

On the topic of Iran’s relationship with Egypt, Dr. Larijani expressed that there are no barriers from Iran’s side and emphasized the importance of Egypt as a historic ally. He stated, “We consider Egypt an important, historic, and honorable country with great scholars and a proud civilization.”

In response to questions about the regional implications of US-Iran relations, Dr. Larijani articulated that negotiations could only be fruitful if both sides seek genuine dialogue rather than using talks as a mere tactic for war preparation. “Negotiations are useful only when both sides accept that their aims cannot be achieved through war,” he stated.

Dr. Larijani’s views on the relationship between Iran and Arab nations stressed that while challenges exist, there are opportunities for cooperation. He highlighted the positive aspects of the recent reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, stating, “We must deepen this relationship. We do not agree on every file, but we can expand cooperation within the framework of the good agreement reached.”

Concluding his remarks, Dr. Larijani noted the pivotal role of Ayatollah Sayyed Khamenei in Iran’s defense strategy, particularly highlighting the swift response to threats during recent conflicts. He expressed deep respect for the martyred figures of resistance, stating, “Not a day or night passes without me remembering the martyred Sayyed. He was a truly great man, a one-of-a-kind figure who will never be repeated.”

In summary, Dr. Larijani’s visit to Lebanon underscores Iran’s commitment to strengthening its regional alliances and advocating for a unified stance against external pressures. His discussions reflect Iran’s broader strategy of fostering cooperative relationships based on mutual respect and shared interests.
