Groundbreaking Advancements in Cell Therapy: A New Era in Medical Treatment

Iran’s advancements in stem cells and cell therapy have been remarkable, propelling the nation from 12th to 8th place globally. This impressive leap underscores Iran’s commitment to enhancing its healthcare sector and developing innovative medical solutions.

During a press conference held in Tehran on Sunday, Mostafa Qanei, an official with the Vice-Presidency for Science and Technology, shared insights about these achievements and the future goals of Iran’s health sector.

“Last year, we had only one cell therapy product on the market and ranked 12th in the world, but this year we have reached eighth place in the world with 5 products,” Qanei stated, indicating the rapid growth in this critical area of healthcare.

He further emphasized that “our goal is to be among the top five countries in the world in this field and eliminate the need for patients to travel abroad for treatment.” This ambition reflects a broader vision of self-sufficiency and innovation in Iranian healthcare.

Technological Projects in the Health Sector

Saeed Sarkar, another official with the Vice-Presidency for Science and Technology, provided details about twenty technological projects currently in progress, all aimed at improving health outcomes. These projects are expected to contribute significantly to the country’s healthcare landscape and include:

  • Production of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) drugs
  • Development of early detection kits for digestive cancers
  • Creation of other health-oriented products

According to Sarkar, these innovations are anticipated to save Iran up to $40 million in foreign currency.

Additionally, he highlighted the dual goals concerning medicinal plants, stating: “We are pursuing two main goals, the first one is to improve the effectiveness of medicinal plants through technologies such as nanotechnology, for example, nanocapsules loaded with curcumin to enhance absorption capacity.”

The second goal focuses on conducting clinical trials to validate the effects of traditional medicine and present the findings to the health ministry for official verification.

Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

As part of Iran’s commitment to advancing healthcare technology, Sarkar discussed the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within the health system. He noted that:

  • AI tools are being deployed in radiology and pathology sectors.
  • These tools complement medical diagnostics by improving accuracy, reducing costs, and enhancing public access to healthcare.

Sarkar emphasized the transformative potential of AI, stating that its implementation can significantly enhance the accuracy and speed of clinical decision-making while also lowering costs and risks associated with treatments.

In February, media reports highlighted that Iran has successfully produced cell therapy products that have received FDA approval. Mehdi Pirsalehi, the director of the Food and Drug Administration, remarked: “Some gene therapy products are also in the clinical trial phase.”

Pirsalehi also pointed out that around 99 percent of the medicine supplied to the domestic market is produced by Iranian knowledge-based companies. These companies have made strides in manufacturing biotechnology products using homegrown technology to meet local needs.

Integrating AI in Healthcare

Qanei reiterated the importance of AI integration in the healthcare sector. In April, he stated that one of the primary objectives of the vice-presidency for science and knowledge-based economy is to leverage AI to reduce treatment costs by 40 percent.

He acknowledged that current healthcare costs in Iran are significantly high and emphasized that utilizing AI-based technologies could be a key solution to lower expenses, especially for chronic diseases, while also enhancing productivity.

“Integrating AI into the healthcare system requires a well-structured roadmap and a comprehensive approach,” Qanei noted. He assured that experts in the field would receive various forms of support to foster innovation and drive progress.
