The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed a cooperation agreement, backed by Japan, to revitalize Lake Urmia in Iran, which has been severely drying since the early 2000s. This initiative, titled “Enhancing Restoration Activities in Lake Urmia through the Effective Use of Agricultural Water,” aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices and improve water resource management. The project seeks to enhance water efficiency, safeguard farmers’ livelihoods, and restore the lake’s ecosystem. Additionally, a related initiative will develop conservation systems for wetlands around Lake Urmia from 2024 to 2028.
