Iran Celebrates National Day of Resistance: Honoring Strength and Resilience

On the occasion of the National Day of Resistance and Withstanding, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has paid tribute to the city of Dezful, a significant symbol of resilience during the Iran-Iraq War. This city, located in southwestern Khuzestan Province, played a crucial role in withstanding enemy offensives during the 1980s.

In a recent post on the social media platform X, Baqaei highlighted the immense hardships faced by Dezful throughout the conflict. The city endured:

  • 176 devastating ‘FROG-7’ and ‘Scud’ missiles
  • 489 bomb and rocket attacks
  • 5,821 artillery shells targeting its neighborhoods

Baqaei emphasized the unwavering spirit of Dezful’s residents, stating, “Despite the attacks, Dezful’s people never fled, ensuring that life in the city persevered.” He described Dezful not merely as a city on a map, but rather as a symbol of resistance and sacrifice for the Iranian people who chose to remain steadfast during the turbulent times.

He further noted that Iran owes a great debt to those who showcased their patriotism through acts of sacrifice and resistance, leaving a lasting impression on the nation’s collective memory. The Iran-Iraq War, which commenced in 1980 when Saddam Hussein invaded Iran with support from Western and regional powers, aimed to seize Khuzestan. Despite facing initial setbacks, Iranians united under the guidance of the late Imam Khomeini, eventually driving back Iraqi forces and reclaiming their territory.

The war concluded in 1988 with a ceasefire, marking a significant moment in Iranian history as Iraq failed to achieve its objectives.

Additionally, it’s noteworthy that May 24-30 has been designated as Khuzestan Week in Iran, commencing with the anniversary of Khorramshahr’s liberation from Iraqi occupation in 1982.
