Celebrate National Clean Air Day: A Call to Action for a Healthier Planet!

In a significant event aimed at raising awareness about air quality, the National Clean Air Day ceremony took place today in Tehran. This event featured prominent figures such as President Masoud Pezeshkian, Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarqandi, and Shina Ansari, the head of the Department of Environment. The ongoing National Clean Air Week, which runs from January 18 to 22, promotes the theme of “National determination for clean air with renewable energy.”

During the ceremony, Shina Ansari addressed the audience, emphasizing the severity of air pollution while acknowledging that it is a longstanding issue rather than a sudden crisis. “We will not deny the air pollution problem. However, it should be noted that air pollution has not evolved overnight to be tackled immediately and easily. It demands logical decisions along with national determination to be dealt with,” she stated.

In recent months, a national working group has been established to combat air pollution, particularly in the country’s most affected cities, including:

Ansari mentioned that in collaboration with the Ministry of Oil, efforts are underway to enhance fuel quality as part of their comprehensive strategy to reduce air pollution.

President Pezeshkian also spoke at the event, underscoring the importance of transitioning away from fossil fuels. He stated, “Fundamental changes will be brought about by minimizing fossil fuel consumption and replacing them with renewables such as solar energy.” This highlights a crucial shift towards sustainable energy sources that can significantly improve air quality.

In August 2024, Ansari reiterated the crucial role of the Department of Environment in implementing effective policies to combat air pollution. “Adopting proper policies and monitoring their implementation is the main responsibility of the Department of Environment to deal with air pollution,” she explained.

Key strategies proposed by Ansari to tackle air pollution include:

  1. Decommissioning worn-out vehicles: Removing outdated cars from the roads to reduce emissions.
  2. Improving fuel quality: Ensuring that fuels used in vehicles meet high standards.
  3. Enhancing public transportation: Developing efficient public transport systems to decrease the number of private vehicles on the road.
  4. Resource allocation: Providing necessary funding and resources to implement pollution control measures.
  5. Reducing industrial emissions: Implementing stricter regulations on industries that contribute to air pollution.

The Clean Air Law, enacted in July 2017, was aimed at addressing the persistent air quality issues in the country. However, despite its introduction, air quality remains critically poor, largely due to the failure of responsible entities to fulfill their legal obligations to enforce the law.

To effectively combat air pollution, it is essential to establish stringent environmental regulations, enforce laws rigorously, and invest in renewable energy development. Public awareness is also critical. Raising consciousness about the detrimental effects of pollution can motivate the community to take action.

Some additional measures that can be taken to mitigate air pollution include:

  • Improving waste management: Enhancing waste disposal and recycling systems to prevent pollution.
  • Upgrading sewage and water treatment: Investing in infrastructure to improve environmental conditions.
  • Enhancing public health services: Expanding health services in underserved areas to better address pollution-related health issues.

As the government and environmental officials work together to implement these strategies, the hope is that communities across the nation will experience cleaner air and a healthier environment.

Ultimately, the commitment to clean air and renewable energy is not just a governmental responsibility; it requires the collective effort of all citizens to create a lasting impact on air quality.
