Iran and IFSW Join Forces to Enhance Professional Ethics in Social Work
TEHRAN – The collaboration between Iran and the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) is set to enhance professional ethics in social work through three pivotal initiatives, as highlighted by Hassan Mousavi-Chalak, the head of the Iranian Social Workers Association.
Mousavi-Chalak stated that these initiatives aim to strengthen the ethical framework guiding social work practices. Here’s a breakdown of the key measures being implemented:
- Research on Ethical Principles: The first initiative focuses on conducting research to implement the global social work statement of ethical principles, which was ratified in 2018 during the annual general meeting. This research will initially be rolled out in the Asia-Pacific region before expanding to a global level.
- Impact of Artificial Intelligence: The second measure involves investigating how artificial intelligence (AI) influences ethical social work practices, ensuring that technology enhances rather than undermines social work.
- Amendments to Global Statements: Finally, plans are underway to amend and promote the global statement of ethical principles, adapting it to meet contemporary challenges.
These comments were made by Mousavi-Chalak during the recent annual meeting of the IFSW in the Asia-Pacific region. He also announced that the 28th Asia-Pacific Social Work Regional Conference will take place from November 18 to 21 in Sri Lanka. The conference will focus on social work responses to climate change and other environmental issues.
At this gathering, Iran, like many other participating nations, shared an overview of its social workers’ association activities for 2024. The report from the Iran Association of Social Workers highlighted several key areas:
- Policymaking Participation: Active engagement in shaping social policies.
- Collaborations: Interactions with both governmental and non-governmental organizations.
- Academic Partnerships: Collaborations with universities and educational institutions.
- Community Engagement: Involvement with media, students, volunteers, and veterans.
Additionally, the report emphasized the association’s participation in scientific and research activities, specialized conferences, and international interactions aimed at improving social work practices.
The Iranian Association of Social Workers stands out as the most proactive non-governmental organization (NGO) in shaping social policy within Iran. Members of the association benefit from a range of services, including:
- Professional Training: Workshops and training sessions to enhance skills.
- Conferences and Seminars: Opportunities to participate in various academic and professional gatherings.
- Community Campaigns: Engagement in social campaigns and recreation activities.
- Employment Support: Assistance with job placements and referrals.
The IFSW, a global organization dedicated to promoting social justice, human rights, and social development, plays a crucial role in supporting its 141 country members. The federation provides a united voice for social workers worldwide and has been granted Special Consultative Status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), along with partnerships with key organizations such as UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR, and OHCHR.
During the upcoming 28th Asia-Pacific Social Work Regional Conference, social work professionals, academics, and advocates from across the region will convene to tackle the urgent challenges presented by climate change and environmental degradation. Through a series of keynote presentations, panel discussions, and interactive workshops, participants will explore innovative approaches and best practices for integrating environmental issues into social work practice.
This collaboration marks a significant step toward enhancing the ethical standards and practices in social work, ensuring that professionals are equipped to handle the complexities of modern societal challenges, particularly those related to environmental concerns.
In conclusion, the ongoing efforts between Iran and the IFSW reflect a commitment to fostering a more ethical and effective social work environment, addressing the pressing issues facing communities today.
