Berlin Protesters Risk Deportation Amid Growing Solidarity for Gaza
Across the globe, demonstrations in solidarity with the Palestinian people have erupted, passionately calling for an end to the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza. Activists are uniting to demand justice and highlight the humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians. This article explores the recent surge of protests worldwide, driven by the desire for peace and accountability.
Activists in Marseille, France, initiated a hunger strike on March 31 under the banner of “Strike for Justice in Palestine.” Their movement has since expanded to Geneva, Switzerland, aiming to raise global awareness and garner support for their cause. Pascal André, a French doctor involved in the hunger strike, shared his insights with Anadolu Agency.
“We, along with many of our fellow citizens, launched a hunger strike on March 31 in Marseille. Since then, we have traveled to 12 cities across France to engage with the public. The international laws on this matter are clear, but they are not being respected,” André stated.
Meanwhile, in Berlin, Germany, thousands took to the streets in response to calls from Gaza, demonstrating their opposition to the war. However, the Berlin Immigration Office has issued deportation orders for three European Union citizens and one American linked to protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza. These individuals are required to leave Germany by April 21, or face deportation, although their cases have yet to be adjudicated in court.
Recently, these deportation orders have sparked comparisons to the actions of the Trump administration in the U.S., specifically regarding student protesters. Critics argue that the freedom of movement for the EU citizens may be compromised, potentially conflicting with EU laws that protect this fundamental right.
In the United Kingdom, large crowds gathered in cities such as Manchester and Glasgow. Protesters condemned the “Zionist regime’s genocide in Gaza” while calling for the release of detained anti-war activists. In Glasgow, chants of “End the silence and complicity” echoed as demonstrators urged the government and international community to take decisive action against the Israeli assault on Gaza.
Sweden also witnessed significant rallies in both Stockholm and Malmö, where thousands raised the Palestinian flag and demanded an end to the ongoing Israeli attacks. Participants emphasized the necessity for international action and accountability for those responsible for the violence.
In the Netherlands, a powerful demonstration took place in Utrecht, where participants condemned the “ongoing genocide in Gaza.” Rotterdam saw a poignant moment as a child, holding a Palestinian flag, stood defiantly against supporters of the Israeli occupation. Meanwhile, Lyon, France, was filled with demonstrators demanding an immediate halt to Israeli military operations.
In Dublin, a major rally, led by Irish healthcare workers, expressed solidarity with Gazans. Protesters condemned Israel’s actions while calling for a more robust international response. In Brussels, Belgium, demonstrators carried banners reading “Stop Gaza,” urging an end to the military campaign against Gaza.
Activists in Oslo, Norway, held a solemn rally, honoring the memory of Palestinian children who lost their lives in Gaza. This collective action reflects a growing global outcry as the humanitarian crisis deepens.
North Africa also saw significant participation. In Tangier, Morocco, a five-hour demonstration took place against the normalization of ties with Israel. Political and civil society activists rallied, demanding a ban on the passage of Israeli military and commercial ships through Moroccan waters.
In Asia, Japanese activists gathered in Tokyo, voicing slogans in support of Palestine. Activist Furusawa Yusuke continued his individual protests, calling for a boycott of multinational corporations like McDonald’s, accusing them of complicity in the ongoing genocide.
In Jakarta, Indonesia, university students assembled in front of the U.S. embassy, expressing their support for Gaza and condemning the United States’ ongoing support for Israel. Similarly, a massive rally was organized in Istanbul, Turkey, denouncing the Israeli attacks and reaffirming support for the Palestinian people.
The coordinated demonstrations worldwide reflect a unified demand for:
- Immediate ceasefire
- Unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza
- Accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against Palestinians
As activists continue to rally in cities around the world, it is clear that the call for justice and peace for Palestine resonates deeply across nations and cultures. This global solidarity movement underscores the urgent need for action and accountability in the face of ongoing violence and humanitarian crises.
