Karen Homayounfar Crowned Islamic Revolution Artist of the Year: A Celebration of Musical Excellence

In a significant recognition of artistic excellence, renowned composer Karen Homayounfar has been honored with the prestigious title of Islamic Revolution Artist of the Year. This accolade was presented during the closing ceremony of the 11th Islamic Revolution Art Week, a prominent festival organized by the Art Bureau of the Islamic Ideology Dissemination Organization (IIDO). Homayounfar received this esteemed award for his evocative music album, “Sayyed al-Ummah,” which pays tribute to the martyr Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

During the ceremony, held on a Sunday evening, Homayounfar expressed his heartfelt gratitude, stating, “I have received many awards, but this one is truly extraordinary.” The award was presented to him by notable filmmakers Ebrahim Hatamikia and Ahmadreza Darvish, alongside Hojatoleslam Mohammad Qomi, the IIDO director, and Mohammad-Mehdi Dadman, the director of the Art Bureau.

Homayounfar humbly acknowledged the honor, saying, “Among all the nominees, many were more deserving than I, and I am grateful to the selection committee for choosing someone as small as me for this great honor.” He further shared his passion for his homeland, stating, “My love for the people and Iran runs deep, and now my work has become even more challenging.”

He continued, “We live in a geography of love, expectation, and hope. All our scholars and celebrities throughout history are figures any nation would dream of having.” Homayounfar expressed his aspirations for Iranian artists, saying, “I hope the artists of our country, all highly talented, can swiftly open the cultural capitals of the world with their works in literature, music, cinema, and with the support of officials.”

He concluded with a powerful message, stating, “That would be our great victory when they recognize the culture of this ancient land, the heart of the Middle East.”

During the ceremony, Hatamikia praised Homayounfar’s remarkable contributions to film music, stating, “Honestly, music is the wing of this flight. A master like Karen Homayounfar is a true maestro of flight. He has a grasp of all heights, and the evidence of this claim lies in the music of the films he has crafted.” He highlighted the emotional depth of Homayounfar’s compositions, noting how they convey a sense of mourning that resonates deeply with listeners.

Born in 1978, Karen Homayounfar is an acclaimed musician and composer, boasting numerous awards, including the Crystal Simorgh for Best Film Score at the Fajr Film Festival—which he has won four times—and the Golden Statue for Best Music at the Iran Cinema Celebration, awarded five times. In 2022, he was also a judge on the popular television competition “Asr-e Jadid” (New Era).

Homayounfar emerged as the selected recipient from five distinguished nominees for the title of Islamic Revolution Artist of the Year. The nominees included:

  • Golestan Jafarjan – Recognized for her book “Autumn Has Arrived”, which received commendation from the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, and has had 135 reprints.
  • Mohammad Hamzehzadeh – Noted for his creation of the book series “Tales of Delestan and Golestan.”
  • Mohammadreza Doost Mohammadi – Acknowledged for his portraits of martyred commanders of the Resistance Front and significant contributions to resistance art.
  • Mohammad Rasouli – Honored for his poignant poetry during the Al-Aqsa Storm and in crucial moments of the Resistance Front.

Additionally, during the ceremony, Kamal Sharaf, a prominent cartoonist and caricaturist from Yemen, was named the international figure of Resistance Art. He received this recognition for creating nearly 500 works following the Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, which emphasizes his vital role in the artistic narrative emerging from Yemen. The award was presented to Ibrahim Mohammad al-Deilami, the Yemeni ambassador to Tehran.

After accepting the award, al-Deilami expressed his appreciation for the festival organizers and extended greetings to the fighters of the Resistance Front. He stated, “At this stage, where the struggle has reached its peak, it is incumbent upon all of us to surge against the forces of disbelief; undoubtedly, only the men of God can withstand the front of disbelief.”

He added, “On behalf of Kamal Sharaf who, with his steadfastness and his pen, has received this award, I extend my gratitude. We all must stand firm on this front, retreating not even an inch, and everyone should come forward with whatever they have to contribute, just as artists fight with their pens.”

The Islamic Revolution Art Week is an annual event organized by the Art Bureau of the IIDO, commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of documentarian Morteza Avini. This week features a variety of activities, including art exhibitions, workshops, and theatrical musical performances.

Avini, who was martyred by a landmine in 1993 during his last trip to the former Iran-Iraq war zone, is celebrated for his impactful documentary work, including “A City in the Sky,” which explores the fall of Khorramshahr and the city’s liberation during the Iran-Iraq war. He is acclaimed for his narrative style and has been referred to as “the master of martyred writers” by his peers and war veterans.

Throughout the years, Avini has been honored by various personalities and organizations in Iran, ensuring that his legacy and contributions to documentary filmmaking remain a vital part of the cultural discourse.
