Tehran Pays Tribute to Hakim Nizami: Celebrating a Timeless Legacy

Hakim Nizami is a celebrated poet whose influence and legacy resonate deeply within Persian literature. His works have shaped the literary landscape across Persian-speaking regions, making him a pivotal figure in the cultural heritage of Iran and beyond. Recently, the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Seyyed Abbas Salehi, emphasized Nizami’s enduring impact during the fourth commemoration ceremony held on March 12, recognized as Nizami Ganjavi Commemoration Day in the Iranian calendar.

The ceremony took place at Vahdat Hall in Tehran and was attended by ambassadors and cultural attachés from various countries, including Tajikistan, Sierra Leone, the Czech Republic, Serbia, and Croatia. It also attracted a large audience of professors and researchers dedicated to Persian language, literature, wisdom, and Islamic mysticism.

Salehi remarked on Nizami’s profound exploration of earthly love and its connection to divine love, stating: “This is a highly delicate realm, and Hakim Nizami is someone who was able to speak of earthly love without crossing the threefold boundaries of love or slipping from one domain to another.” He elaborated on how Nizami intricately linked earthly love with divine love, a pathway that, although not fully realized, was profoundly initiated by him.

Narrative and storytelling hold a significant place in Persian literature, a sentiment echoed by Salehi: “Narrative and storytelling have a deep-rooted history in Persian literature, and there is a significant difference between a fable and a story.” He highlighted Nizami’s role as a master storyteller and poet, underscoring his prominence in Iranian literature.

Salehi further stated, “Hakim Nizami is a turning point in Iran’s lyrical literature. He had a deep sense of belonging and attachment to Iran, and throughout his poetry, this affinity is intricately woven.” He noted that themes of myths, kings, and the essence of Iran are prevalent in Nizami’s works, showcasing the poet’s connection to his homeland.

The Ambassador of Tajikistan to Iran also spoke at the event, emphasizing how Nizami’s name and works connect regional countries like Iran, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan. He remarked: “His literary contributions are shared across these countries, and today, they invite us to strengthen our cultural ties in this ever-changing world.”

Nizomiddin Zohidi, another speaker, highlighted Nizami’s unique status, stating: “Hakim Nizami was one of the great poets who held a special role in several aspects. Like Ferdowsi, he was given the title of ‘Hakim’ (sage), and his poetry is not merely verse but a fusion of knowledge, wisdom, and deep thought.” He described Nizami as the greatest composer of wise and romantic tales, noting his groundbreaking work, the ‘Khamsa’ (Five Treasures), which has left an indelible mark on Persian literature.

• Innovative Legacy: Zohidi mentioned that many poets have drawn inspiration from Nizami’s ‘Khamsa’, continuing the tradition of ‘Khamsa’ writing.
• Global Influence: He noted that even in the Indian subcontinent, poets have composed works inspired by Nizami, showcasing the widespread influence of Persian poetry.
• Preservation of Works: Nizami’s esteemed position in Persian literature has prompted scholars worldwide to preserve his works, making them accessible in university curricula.

The President of the Society for the National Heritage of Iran also emphasized the ongoing celebrations for Nizami, stating, “Currently, 27 provinces across the country are hosting programs in honor of Hakim Nizami.” Mahmoud Shalouei highlighted the role of Iran’s cultural attachés in organizing events dedicated to Nizami’s legacy.

Shalouei shared updates on the cultural initiatives honoring Nizami, including the installation of a statue in Tehran’s Vanak Square and the publication of several books about him, with more to be unveiled at the upcoming Tehran International Book Fair. He expressed appreciation for the dedication shown by the Ambassador of Tajikistan and the Embassy of India in promoting Nizami’s commemoration programs.

Moreover, Shalouei urged the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance to support the production of cinematic works that honor and preserve the cultural figures of Iran. He stated: “Hakim Nizami, known as Jamal al-Din Abu Muhammad Ilyas ibn Yusuf ibn-Zakki, is revered as the greatest romantic epic poet in Persian literature.” Nizami’s legacy is celebrated not only in Iran but also in countries like Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan.

Nizami’s extensive knowledge of various sciences of his time is reflected in his poetry, which showcases his ability to select appropriate words and phrases, innovate new themes, and depict nature and human experiences through vivid imagery.

His magnum opus, the ‘Khamsa’ or ‘Panj Ganj’ (Five Treasures), is a monumental work in the realm of lyrical storytelling, culminating from 30 years of dedication to arranging and compiling his poetry.
