Japan Boosts Humanitarian Efforts: Aid to WFP Enhances Refugee Support in Iran

In a significant humanitarian gesture, the government of Japan has pledged $360,000 to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), aimed at supporting vulnerable refugees in Iran. This generous contribution will primarily be utilized to procure essential wheat flour, a staple food that plays a crucial role in the diets of many refugees residing in Iranian settlements.

The WFP announced this initiative in a press release dated March 4, emphasizing that wheat flour is not only a vital source of energy but also a versatile ingredient used widely for preparing bread. By ensuring access to this essential food item, the WFP is addressing both the immediate nutritional needs of refugees and promoting long-term food security within these communities.

“We deeply appreciate the unwavering generosity and solidarity of the Government and people of Japan in supporting our operations in Iran,” stated Maysaa Alghribawy, WFP Representative and Country Director in the Islamic Republic of Iran. “This vital contribution reflects Japan’s steadfast commitment to improving the lives of the most vulnerable refugees, and we are truly grateful for their partnership and trust in our work.”

The WFP’s operations currently assist approximately 33,000 Afghan and Iraqi refugees across 20 settlements in Iran, providing not just food assistance, but also educational and livelihood support. This multifaceted approach aims to empower refugees and integrate them into local communities.

“Japan has been supporting Afghan refugees living in Iran for over 40 years and commends the Iranian government for its longstanding commitment to providing Afghan refugees the same level of healthcare and education as Iranian citizens,” remarked Tamaki Tsukada, the Japanese Ambassador to Iran. He further noted, “At the same time, we recognize that the increasing number of Afghan refugees in Iran presents a significant challenge for the Iranian government. We hope this contribution will help alleviate the nutritional needs of Afghan refugees.”

Iran stands as one of the world’s largest hosts of refugees, having provided essential support to approximately 3.8 million refugees and refugee-like individuals over the past four decades. This includes a significant number of displaced individuals primarily from Afghanistan and Iraq, who benefit from access to healthcare, education, and livelihood opportunities. Iran’s commitment to refugee welfare is evident in its efforts to ensure that those affected by displacement receive necessary support.

The United Nations World Food Programme is recognized as the largest humanitarian organization globally, dedicated to saving lives during emergencies and utilizing food assistance as a means to foster peace, stability, and prosperity among communities recovering from conflicts, disasters, and the effects of climate change.

Japan’s commitment to supporting Iran in its efforts to host Afghan refugees was further emphasized in January. Ambassador Tsukada highlighted the Japanese government’s determination to assist Iran, particularly in addressing the high costs associated with education, health, and treatment for Afghan refugees living in the country. This support aims to enhance the quality of life and opportunities for these individuals.

During a meeting with Nader Yar-Ahmadi, head of the National Organization for Migration, Tsukada expressed the importance of collaborative efforts between Japan and Iran. He noted that attracting support from other international organizations is crucial to effectively tackle challenges, particularly regarding issues like drug abuse and addiction among refugee populations.

Yar-Ahmadi reciprocated by expressing Iran’s readiness to collaborate with Japan on these vital issues. He stated, “We expect Japan, along with other countries, to provide more humanitarian services to refugees, particularly in infrastructure areas such as health and education.”

He highlighted the growing need for innovative solutions, particularly in education, as Iran has reached its capacity for face-to-face education for foreign nationals. Yar-Ahmadi called on Japan’s ambassador to assist in implementing a virtual educational program tailored for refugees in Iran, ensuring that educational access remains a priority.

This concerted effort between Japan and Iran showcases the international community’s commitment to addressing the pressing needs of refugees.
