Celebrate National Environmental Education Day: Inspiring Future Generations for a Greener Planet!

TEHRAN – The significance of environmental education was emphasized during the national Environmental Education Day organized by the Department of Environment (DOE) in Tehran on Tuesday. Head of the DOE, Shina Ansari, highlighted that environmental protection is not just a government responsibility but a public duty. This initiative aligns with national policy documents that stress the importance of educating citizens about environmental issues, as reported by Mehr news agency.

Ansari underlined the critical role of early environmental education, stating, “To get out of the current situation, we need to focus on the education sector.” In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the DOE is committed to training eco-conscious students across the nation, aiming to transform their attitudes toward the environment.

In his address, Education Minister Alireza Kazemi mentioned that the ministry is actively working to integrate environmental awareness into both formal and informal curricula. He warned, “Today, the world is facing numerous threats. If we fail to address them, humans will be in great danger with nothing to be left for the future.”

According to Kazemi, the environmental crisis is one of the most pressing challenges humanity faces today. He noted that environmental degradation has significant and often irreversible consequences, necessitating immediate attention and action.

“Teaching students about the environment and raising awareness regarding conservation are fundamental solutions,” Kazemi added. He outlined several measures being implemented in the education sector, including:

  • Environmental protection studies in vocational schools
  • Establishment of technical-vocational schools by the DOE for environmental education
  • Promotion of public education to enhance understanding of environmental issues

“However, for these initiatives to succeed, we need broader public education to improve overall understanding of environmental challenges,” Kazemi emphasized.

World Environmental Education Day

World Environmental Education Day, celebrated annually on January 26, aims to address both global and local environmental issues while raising awareness about the necessity of public participation in conservation efforts. This observance plays a crucial role in mitigating the various impacts of climate change.

Since its inception in 1975, when the first International Workshop on Environmental Education took place in Belgrade, World Environmental Education Day has grown to include participation from experts across more than 70 countries. This foundational event laid down the principles of environmental education under the auspices of United Nations programmes.

The resultant Belgrade Charter encapsulates the essential demands of environmental education, aiming to develop a globally aware population that is concerned about environmental challenges. The objectives of this charter include:

  1. To cultivate knowledge and skills necessary to address current environmental problems.
  2. To foster attitudes and motivations that encourage collective action towards sustainable solutions.
  3. To prevent future environmental issues through education and awareness.

Understanding the causes and effects of climate change is crucial, as is recognizing that sustainable development is key to meeting present needs without jeopardizing future generations. It is also essential to acknowledge that protecting our environment is vital for ensuring our survival.
